The Intricacies of Cultural Fit: A Look at Non-Indian CEOs at Indian IT Firms! 🌏 Leadership Beyond Borders: When Thierry Delaporte took the helm at Wipro, he introduced a strategic restructuring from his base in Paris. His initiatives aimed to streamline Wipro’s operations, reducing layers within the organization to enhance agility and team spirit. However, Delaporte’s tenure was marked by challenges typical of a remote leadership setup. The absence from Wipro's Indian roots and main delivery centers meant that the connections to the company's cultural ethos were tenuous. 💼 Importance of On-Ground Presence: In the world of Indian IT, leadership is not just about setting strategic direction; it involves embodying shared values and a commitment to nurturing talent. Delaporte’s intermittent presence in India was perceived as insufficient to grasp the subtleties of this role. The departure of many long-serving Wipro leaders, who were integral to the company’s entrepreneurial spirit, indicated a cultural and generational chasm that was hard to bridge from afar. 🔧 Restructuring and Cultural Dissonance: In his pursuit of efficiency, Delaporte's approach inadvertently sidelined some Wipro stalwarts, creating voids that couldn't easily be filled with external hires. As someone who is now at the front line in cyber resilience, my view is this is the type of approach that the industry needs. BFSI firms are busy mapping their network, infrastructure, apps to important business services and improving the processes for responding to disruptions originating within and outside the firm. As I mentioned BFSI and non-BFSI firms exist in overlapping digital ecosystems. A fabric approach is the right approach to resilience. The fabric needs to enable "automated switching and recovery" where "recovery" may need infrastructure setup, configuration and careful data load from backup in some cases. and the "automated switching" may be between network elements, infrastructure elements, application elements, or even business services to reduce the impact and recovery timelines. Most importantly the "automated switching" may also be between upstream suppliers/systems and downstream distributors/systems. I have no doubt that all firms will need to migrate to approaches like this. You are certain to hear the word "enterprise ecosystems fabric" more than simple ERP in the future.
