In a recent piece for The Media Leader UK, I dive into how we can engage a digitally native generation with the tools and platforms they use every day. Snap’s recent UK election engagement is proof of what’s possible: 🚀 1.64 million voter registrations across 18-34 year-olds, with nearly half from Gen Z. 📲 90% of 13-24 year-olds active on Snapchat were empowered with voter education tools and resources. 📈 An incredible rate of 3,000 voter registrations every five minutes—driven by friends sharing content that reflected their values and causes. Ever since, she has focused on advancing female entrepreneurs. Her start-up accelerator, Springboard Enterprises, which she co-founded 24 years ago, has admitted 930 companies, including Zipcar, the RealReal and iRobot. More than 200 of them have been acquired, 28 have gone public, and 10 have valuations of at least $1 billion. ... What types of companies are you betting on now? "It’s total chaos out here. Look at all these companies vying for supremacy in artificial intelligence. Every business model is challenged today. I’ve always believed that in chaos there are great opportunities. There is a wider swatch of women out there who have been funded through what I call “micro funds” — funds that were initially $25 million, that have come back and raised $50 million, $75 million, $100 million. They’re growing. And I look at that as a marketplace that has tremendous deal flow, that not everybody is looking at, that there will be real success stories coming out of. And we want to be a part of that. We want to be a leader in it. ... There are women leading in artificial intelligence, especially in how it’s applied to advancing their companies in other sectors. But I’m concerned that only about 20 percent of those working directly with artificial intelligence are women. Women are extremely competitive in the market — it’s just that the number of women competing in the market is fewer than the number of men. As a podcaster, I loved seeing the role that podcasts played during this election. It reinforced the experience that I've seen with The Chemical Show Podcast. Listening to a podcast is better and more satisfying than eavesdropping on a great conversation (you know you've done it!), you're actually invited in to be part of the conversation. 🪘Podcasting is *long-form* and long-form content allows for great engagement, more time develop your narrative and build understanding with your audience.... it's more than a "sound-bite" moment. 🔉Podcast listeners actually *listen*... while they're driving or walking or working... podcast listeners are not rushing to get away, they are leaning in, passively participating in such a way as they stay tuned in. 🎨The Art of the Interview is powerful in podcasting. Whether 30-minutes or 3 hours, the podcast interview offers a dialogue and conversation. A great interviewer brings depth of understanding, draws out inferences (and surprises!), and creates value for the guest and the audience. I learn something new every time I record a podcast interview and listen to an episode. It's a privilege to hold and share great conversations with great leaders. As our world gets more fraught and complex, audiences are increasingly choosing news sources which are more visual, reports are more watched, less read, with YouTube continuing its rise. The implications of this trend for deep understanding of difficult issues is worth pondering. More people are concerned about how to grapple with the rising torrent of fake news, and many having doubts about how AI might be deployed by newsrooms. Edelman has partnered with the Reuters Institute for this annual report as we are all in the business of communicating and good, credible and trusted information is critical to everyone in that process

At The Trust Project, we talk a lot about the "anxious middle" our research has found and the news avoidance that may result. ICYMI, Benjamin Toff's book dives into this subject and provides some interesting insights. He places the number of news avoiders at 8% of the U.S. population. I'd call that the hard-core. There are many more who loosely avoid the news, take time off from news or rely on their friends instead of a regular news source because of anxiety and distrust. To win them back and fulfill its core role in democracy, journalism must "redouble efforts to engage with the broader world," Toff urges. Agreed. Top takeaways from the "Beyond the Basics: A #GenerativeAI Masterclass for Business Communicators" at #IABC24. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a workshop led by Matt Russell from the Mayo Clinic. The masterclass focused on leveraging #ChatGPT and other AI tools to grow and enhance business communications. Here are my top takeaways (first draft thanks to ChatGPT;) 1. For the first time, we’re releasing PR benchmarking data for syndicated content. Stacker distributes thousands of stories on behalf of other newsrooms to editors at over 3,000 news outlets who each have the option to republish select stories to their readers (think AP wire, but for features curated from 3rd party newsrooms) Stories are tagged by vertical (sports/news/money/etc) - and when chosen, published to corresponding sections of publishers’ sites via RSS. For the first time, we are starting to release cuts of the success data, benchmarked. If earned PR is what you're after, use this to optimize for distribution. Screenshot is for all data to date from 2024. A few takeaways from digging into the data and supporting stories: 1) Latch on to trending news / current events It’s easy to look at the data and say “we should tell entertainment stories.” Tempting as that is, it’s likely not an option for most brands. But latching on to news stories can work for any niche, and we’ve repeatedly seen this strategy work for teams everywhere from the sleep space (mattress marketplaces covering bed bugs during the Paris bed bug mania of October ‘23) to transportation (Lyft covering economic impact of when Taylor Swift visits a city). 2) You don’t need to stay in your lane You don’t need to be a travel brand to tell travel related stories. We’ve seen fintech companies tell great stories about saving money on road trips, healthcare teams cover getting over jet lag, and so on. Same can be said for lifestyle, sports, money, etc. Which leads to the next point… 3) Have range These are averages, and the truth is, a successful PR strategy will produce stories across all verticals. A trend we’ve seen is that some news outlets primarily pick up Money related content, since they are down a business writer. Others are really only looking for evergreen lifestyle features. So if you want to maximize your reach…. Make sure you are covering your bases.
