#29 Houston Astros: The Top 3 Pitchers Drafted Since 2013 The Houston Astros have been a model of consistency in Major League Baseball (MLB) for nearly a decade, largely due to the depth and value they’ve received from their starting rotation. However, what may come as a surprise is that the Astros rank in the bottom tier when developing their top 3 drafted pitchers each year, as revealed in this ongoing case study. Key rotation members like Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, Gerrit Cole, Zack Greinke, Luis Garcia, and Jose Urquidy were all acquired from outside the Astros' farm system—either through trades or as undrafted free agents. This raises an interesting point: the role and impact of undrafted free agents in combination with this study. Lance McCullers, despite his contributions to the MLB Team over the years, narrowly missed inclusion in the study, having been drafted in 2012. Injury Rate: 21% The Astros have one of the best/lowest injury rates at 21%. Of the 32 pitchers studied, 7 suffered arm injuries, resulting in 5 surgeries, with an average of 233 innings pitched before surgery. Notably, no major arm injuries have occurred since Blair Henley underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022. Other notable surgeries include Riley Ferrell (2015), Forrest Whitley (2016), and Corbin Martin (2017). MLB Pitchers: 7 Out of the top 3 drafted pitchers since 2013, 7 have reached the majors: Kent Emanuel, Forrest Whitley, Corbin Martin, Tyler Ivey, Hunter Brown, and Blair Henley. Hunter Brown alone has accounted for 86% of the 431 total MLB innings pitched by these pitchers. Cost Efficiency – $/MLB IP: $82,063 The Astros’ investment in signing bonuses has resulted in an expenditure of $82,063 per MLB inning pitched—ranking last in return on investment. Pitchers like Mark Appel, Riley Ferrell, Forrest Whitley, and J.B. Bukauskas received over $14 million in bonuses but have combined for just 0.2 innings pitched for Houston. Trading Away Talent Like the Mets, the Astros have frequently traded away their top pitching prospects (10 trades involving top arms). Major trades included Mark Appel, who received a $6.3M bonus but was traded to Philadelphia in 2015 for Ken Giles, and J.B. Bukauskas, traded in 2019 for Zack Greinke after receiving a $3.6M bonus. These moves likely impacted both the number of pitchers reaching the majors and the total innings pitched. Final Takeaway Despite their remarkable success, much of the Astros’ rotation strength has come from outside the organization or through the development of undrafted free agents. The success of Hunter Brown is a bright spot, but as a whole, the Astros have yet to fully capitalize on the potential of their top pitching prospects in the same way they've done with acquisitions and trades. How Juan Soto has just made himself $600+ Million Dollars…. ⚾️ Juan Soto has just set the stage for the largest contract AV (Average Per Year) in MLB history…. all at the age of 26, Soto has proven year after year that he the prodigal son of Major League Baseball and provides instant impact to any team he plays on. Value 🔁: To even be considered for a contract of this magnitude the trade offs between the organization and the player must be close to equal. Soto has slugged a .989 OPS with 41 home runs and an World Series berth. There’s your Value he provides Finances 💵: Since many teams have varied payrolls and amounts of money to spend this free agency the potential teams that could land the services of Soto are minimized. Since said team would have to be able to make and offer estimated to be over $620 Million Dollars to even start a conversation Prediction 🔮: Free agency is very unpredictable and is hard to get a grasp on because teams keep negotiations private and players use teams for leverage but to my knowledge i would suggest that Juan Soto sign with the….. New York Mets on a 12 year $680 Million Dollar Deal…. it just makes sense. Market of New York ✅ Energized fan base after last seasons post season success ✅ Owner willing to spend huge amounts of dollars over the upcoming years to improve the franchise ✅ and Lindor, Vientos, and Senga all guys that are fairly young and ready to improve as a franchise.

#25 The Texas Rangers: Top 3 Pitchers Drafted Since 2013 The Texas Rangers Baseball Club won the World Series in 2023, establishing a foundation of leadership under Chris Young and Bruce Bochy. Although 2024 was a down year, this was expected due to Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer missing significant time in 2023 and 2024. Their injuries provided opportunities for prospects like Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker, and Owen White. However, as this case study shows, 10 pitchers have reached the majors, but over 50% have experienced arm injuries along the way, and as of yet, no pitcher has become a consistent top 3 MLB starter. Injury Rate: 51% 51% of pitchers in this study faced an arm injury or surgery, totaling 19 injuries and 10 surgeries, with an average time to surgery of 205 innings. Chi Chi Gonzalez (2013) and Brett Martin (2014) reached the majors, averaging 662 innings before surgery. However, 12 of the 14 pitchers drafted from 2016-2020 experienced arm injuries, with 8 requiring surgery, and the average time to surgery fell to just 73 innings. This period coincided with the implementation of a progressive throwing program for the Rangers' top pitching prospects. Whether or not this program remains, its injury impact was significant. MLB Pitchers: 10 The 10 pitchers in this study have combined for 639 MLB innings, led by Brett Martin (189 innings) and Cole Ragans (136 innings), who are no longer with the organization. The Rangers still have 17 active pitchers, including Cody Bradford (132 IP), Jack Leiter (35 IP), and Owen White (7 IP), who could contribute more value in the future. Kumar Rocker has also added 11 innings to the total, but this was after the final results were compiled. Cost Efficiency – $/MLB IP: $68,735 The Rangers' investment in signing bonuses equates to roughly $68,735 per MLB inning pitched, placing them 28th in MLB return on investment. The Rangers, like many teams, have yet to develop a homegrown quality starter. However, the future could be different with the potential rise of Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker, or Brock Porter.

#NIL + The Transfer Portal is chaos for #NCAA institutions, but can be great for players. (It's about time). Cam Ward is a GREAT example of what NIL can do for a player’s career: it allows them to stay in school, get paid, get better, develop further & improve their draft stock. Not to mention, the school, fan base & communities benefit massively. In light of that, his payment is an incredible investment 📈 The old model forced a player to stay or sit out if they transferred while making zero dollars. Meanwhile, their coach could bail at any moment while he made millions. Progress needs to be made & a collective bargaining agreement needs to happen…but of course, we’d have to admit it’s pro sports to do that 🙃 #LinkedInSports #SportsMarketing

Put Tommy John, the pitcher, in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. How many future starting pitchers between the ages of 20-25 will be able to win 288 games, have a career era of 3.34, and accumulate 4710 Major League Baseball (MLB) innings over 26 seasons? On September 25th, 1974, the first Tommy John Surgery was performed on left-handed pitcher Tommy John. Almost 50 years later, could that first Tommy John Surgery also be the most successful? By the time Tommy John underwent the now familiar but at the time revolutionary surgical procedure to repair a pitcher's elbow, he was 31 years old and had pitched 2,142 MLB innings. After undergoing Tommy John surgery, Tommy John went on to pitch until age 46, adding another 2,346 innings to his MLB career. Remarkably, in the five seasons following his surgery, John threw at least 200 innings each year and won 20 games or more in three of those five seasons. In the clip provided, a 38-year-old Tommy John is warming up to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1981 World Series. The clip embodies an era of starting pitchers who have been forgotten and remain overlooked because they didn't possess the big fastball. Tommy John was a pitcher, not a rite of passage. The statistics related to the return to a previous level of performance after Tommy John Surgery are well-known, but what's more intriguing is the evolving landscape of the game. The surgeries are now happening too soon, before careers are ever established, ushering in an era of pitchers with two or three Tommy John surgeries. Achieving at least 1,000 innings after Tommy John surgery is increasingly unlikely in the modern era due to various factors, including evolving pitching strategies, and more conservative management of pitchers' workloads. Given his remarkable post-surgery success and durability, it is time to reevaluate why Tommy John is not in the Hall of Fame. Other Duties Assigned - Assignment #4 Coach's Weekly Radio Show Story At the University of Kansas, I was asked by the sports information department (SID) could I come on Coach Les Miles radio show to talk about player development. IF YOU KNOW ME BY NOW MY ANSWER WAS YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, I jumped on with Brian Hanni and we talked player development. What shocked me before I got on the mic was Coach Miles saying that I was like another head coach for the program. That really meant a lot to me, and it showed me he knew the impact I was making on the team. This was the most empowering message I ever received from a head coach I worked for. BENEFITS Head Coach stamped me. I talked about it a little bit already, but to have my HOF head coach equate my role and impact to being like a head coach of a division 1 college football program was INCREDIBLE. Some of you may know I was a high school coach before fully diving into player development and when I came on the college level my goal was to be a college head coach in 15 years. To see a national championship winning coach already say I was there in the role I was in meant a lot. Ability to explain the role. Player development is different wherever you go and so many people don’t understand the role and its impact. (This is why I create so much content in this space to provide clarity.) I was able to clearly define what I did, why it is important, and how it has impacted the players. I will say that again for those in the back I was able to do the following: Defined what I did Communicate why it is important Demonstrate how it has impacted the players This an opportunity that seldom exist, unless you have a podcast that does it weekly.
