The adult industry has been hit hard recently in regards to banking discrimination. What is banking discrimination? It is when those who work in the adult industry cannot access basic banking or financial services due to stigma and discrimination. Accounts are routinely threatened or closed with no warning – or denied altogether. Securing access to banking means that sex workers control their own finances, rather than third-parties, and businesses can operate securely, as tax-paying members of society. Digital banking is no longer just for the cool kids.   At a recent credit union conference I attended, a lot of the chatter around the room was focused on the sheer volume/proportions of customers who have shifted to an entirely digital banking model.   Despite the public perception of digital banking as the preserve of the young, Boomers and Gen Xers are also major users of these platforms.   But, even though this surge has happened at the front end of the consumer finance experience, banks and credit unions have been extraordinarily slow to provide digital collections servicing and digital delinquent account servicing to customers.   If most people prefer to bank digitally, it follows that they would feel more comfortable and engaged if they could pay their debts digitally as well.   Our data shows there is an almost even split between consumers who would prefer to communicate with customer service on the phone vs online chat. And across all demographics, customers want a tailored, personalized experience.   So, if the very same users, who hold most of your debt, would prefer digital-first collections, what’s holding financial institutions form delivering them?   I’ve provided more detail on the market landscape and some of the ways they can be met head-on in the article below. Consumers don’t go to bank branches for basic services anymore. Instead, their primary motive is guidance for big financial decisions, such as mortgages, car loans and retirement.
