As it reviews Duke Energy Corporation's proposed Carbon Plan, the North Carolina Utilities Commission has an electricity generation “hole” to fill on the state’s road to eliminating pollution. A bipartisan permitting reform bill was released on Monday. The proposed legislation supports FERC's authority to approve transmission lines and paves the way to require interregional transmission planning. If passed, the law would also require planners to consider advanced conductors and reconductoring in order to maximize current transmission capabilities. Water power's important role to the clean energy transition is undeniable, and the renewable's continued bipartisan support is a reflection of the value both parties place on water power's reliability and flexibility.    The release of the Biden Administration's Proposed Rule implementing the Inflation Reduction Act's (IRA) Section 45Y and 48E tax credits (Tech Neutral Credits) is further affirmation of water power's critical contributions, as the Tech Neutral Tax Credits are now available to #hydropower, #pumpedstorage, #marineenergy, and hydrokinetic technologies.   In today's press release, NHA's President and CEO, Malcolm Woolf, said: "We thank the administration, as well as water power’s many champions in Congress who helped shape this bill with a vision for our industry, including Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), as well as Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE), and Representative Suzan DelBene (D-WA)." Advanced Energy United has written and published a report on recommendations for solving challenges with siting and permitting renewable energy sources. This week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Western Area Power Administration issued Request for Proposals (RFPs) to purchase renewable energy certificates (#RECs) from small and minority-owned businesses and Indian Tribes. 🙌 This solicitation calls for 7,000 MWh of carbon pollution-free RECs and includes the Indian Energy Purchase Preference (IEPP), a provision passed by Congress in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which allows #federal agencies to give preference to a Tribal majority-owned business organization when purchasing electricity, energy products, or energy byproducts. Since 2022, the Biden-Harris administration’s White House Council on Native American Affairs has been coordinating across agencies to implement the IEPP and boost Tribal #energy production—part of the effort to run the government on 100% clean power by 2030. “Doing business with Tribes boosts reservation-based economic sustainability in addition to the surrounding communities. We are hopeful this will be a win-win-win for DOE, WAPA, and Tribes,” says Tracey LeBeau, Administrator and CEO of WAPA.
