One of my favorite Maven Showcase projects this week is the LA County Crime Mapping Tool by Tai C. Here's what I love about this one: 👉 The analysis is directly tied to a clear and specific objective – targeting locations in LA County to launch decriminalization ad campaigns. 👉 The output is simple (a single map visual) but provides the exact information that stakeholders need 👉 The interactivity gives users the ability to drill up or down to explore trends at different levels of granularity My only feedback might be to include some specific takeaways and recommendations in the project description itself – such a great way to showcase those analytical thinking skills 💪 Link to the project details in the comments – check it out and leave Tai some love!

I know lots of people are wondering about what the cookie preference UX in Google Chrome will end up looking like—this is a different but related question from a web development point of view. Technically, how would Google Chrome make a "cookie" option that covers both conventional cookies and Google's own user tracking done with non-cookie technologies? (Obviously, one setting has to control both—otherwise the cookies off option would be more like a "take all the ad money from independent sites and send it to YouTube lol" button that no regulator would let them get away with) It looks doable in a few different ways. Thinking about simplicity and privacy though. * Third-party cookie check on Google sites. When a user visits a Google site, the site would use a cookie on a dedicated test domain to see if third-party cookies work. If the browser blocks a third-party cookie, also block Google ad personalization. Least work on the browser side. * Bundle the "cookies off" preference in the browser with Global Privacy Control (GPC). Then, Google sites can check GPC and not do personalized ads if it's on. * Extend the existing browser feature detection mechanism to enable Google Chrome to communicate to Google web properties if it has third-party cookies turned on. Really excited about the new #OpenAI model GPT-4o, but let’s talk about naming. GPT-4o includes a lowercase “O” that stands for “omni,” signaling its multimodality. But depending on the typeface it can look like “40” or “GPT-Forty.” With naming these new models, clarity is more important than creativity, especially if you’ve already done the work to build equity in your brand. Always a good reminder to think about ways your name could be misinterpreted before you announce it!

🤖 🚫 So much vital critique of generative AI / LLMs these days. A new piece from Rob Horning over at his Substack is required reading today https://lnkd.in/gyMtinXU The point of work isn't "abstract alienated labor" reduced to a series of hyper-efficient logical processes. The point of work is the point of everything: to know and be known. Technology puts us a thousand steps removed from that, but that doesn't make it less true. No worthwhile work can be done without effort, intention, subjective experience and purpose. Generative technologies have none of those qualities, and we engage in mythmaking when we pretend they do. Deskilling our work with generative AI is reductionist and dehumanizing; it concedes the wonder and curiosity of human learning to an inert mathematical process. Opt out.

🎙️ Recently, I was a guest on a podcast by my good friend and all-around smart fella, Steve Guberman, and we got into the real stuff—running agencies, making big decisions, and how a little hindsight is always 20/20 wisdom. Is the ease of generating advertising with AI going to change the landscape of our familiar platforms? With Meta and Google flooded with AI-created content, the quality of ads has improved while production costs have plummeted. This accessibility means we can expect a surge in visually appealing but not necessarily effective ads. The abundance of such content raises questions about the identity associated with advertising on these platforms. Will Meta and Google evolve into the digital equivalents of the 'free weekly paper' of the past, flooded with commoditised advertising? I ponder this one in the link below.

This is a fascinating listen, produced by a couple of deep experts on the subject of AI in fundraising. In some ways, alarming...in others, illuminating. Given that I have often described my career as "engineering empathy," in AI I see major threats to the human psyche, as well as shortcuts to focus on what works in influencing giving behaviors. After California Governor Newsom signs this bill into law, companies operating in California will need to provide sources for their AI training data. This will dramatically aid discovery for future and forthcoming lawsuit lawsuits by media companies preparing to sue AI and tech companies. Theft will be punished. I’m looking forward to this type of legislation going national until AI companies have nowhere to hide. There shouldn’t be a problem with being an AI company or using AI, just stop stealing. Be honest about where you get all your data from pay for and ask to license copywritten data. Never assume that there is a right to license but rather that you must ask permission and then pay for the license. And individuals who have telemetric, biometric, and real world data associated with them, should always have the right and the primacy to never be included. It is not the right of any company to take the data of others with or without payment. They must ask, they must get permission, they must show how they’re going to use it, they must get approval, they must compensate, and they must allow for removal. This is how intellectual property has worked for decades before greedy AI companies try to steal from everyone.

Being an early adopter of multimodal #generativeAI, I’m so thrilled to see Adobe announced a slew of new AI capabilities coming to #PremierePro. ✅Particularly the promise of integrating 3rd party like tools Pika, Runway and OpenAI. (Please make sure Kaiber has an integration!) ✅And of course it will be super interesting to see #Firefly Video, their new proprietary AI model. The move “legitimizes” generative artificial intelligence as a tool in our creative arsenal. And I’m sure Apple FCP and others will follow suit. Its something that us genX production peeps have anticipated. And we’re a nimble crew that has adapted our workflows from the old school analog days to our file-based digital present. We saw the birth and wide adoption of NLE’s- from the early Avid days before Premeire even existed. Finally, the biggest thing I’ve learned over the last year while creating my short #aifilms, is that it takes many humans to create a compelling narrative, along with craft and skill to wield the tools to serve it. 👊I hope the chasm between those who embrace and those who resist narrows-and we all come together. As creatives, it’s more important than ever to communicate our value, especially when marketing machines bang on the drum of “automagic” solutions that are mathematically magic, but not literally automatically so.
