John King reviews the new Helen Diller Anchor House at University of California, Berkeley. We provided sustainability consulting to the project team including Morris Adjmi Architects, BDE Architecture and Prometheus Real Estate Group. "As for the tall imposing form, the variety of textures and patterns bring it to life: check out the clean metal sun shades snapped above residential windows, or the rounded brick-clad columns that frame the gouged-out terraces."  Atelier Ten studied various shading and natural ventilation strategies to significantly increase comfort for residents during emergencies and also increase energy efficiency during normal operations. External shading was integrated on the south, east, and west facades to reduce the need for air conditioning, improve occupant comfort and increase resilience. Integrating passive design strategies into this new residence was a critical element due to the recent increase in public safety power shutoffs as a result of climate change. #buildingscience #highereducation #studenthousing https://lnkd.in/e9tj39Zq

Chris Fogarty’s latest piece in Building Design tackles a pressing issue in contemporary architecture: the rise of what he terms “fast casual architecture” – a wave of uniform, uninspired housing developments reshaping cities across the US. Chris highlights the challenges architects face as they contend with tight budgets, building codes, and local government restrictions, all of which funnel design choices into predictable, unremarkable forms. In the article, Chris explores how the typical “4-over-1” or “5-over-2” timber-framed housing project, with its repetitive façades and limited architectural ambition, has become a standard across the US. This style, he explains, emerged from changes in building codes and zoning requirements, allowing larger wood-framed buildings to be quickly and cheaply constructed. The result? Developments that look strikingly similar regardless of region – built to satisfy budgets, not to inspire. Chris calls for architects to push back against these limitations by creating thoughtful, innovative alternatives within these constraints. We're thrilled to announce that Anthony Cataldo, AIA, LEED AP is featured in Bisnow! After speaking at Bisnow’s SOCAL Industrial Conference, Anthony was invited to share his insights on California’s new building code aimed at reducing embodied carbon. This amendment, effective July 1, marks a significant step towards net-zero goals. As Anthony says, "My guess is California did this because they want to get us starting to look at carbon and being accountable, ultimately, for the embodied carbon that our buildings are producing," Lowney Architecture Chief Operating Officer Anthony Cataldo said. "When the building code is updated a year and a half down the road, they’ll start to turn up the heat." Formation Association Architecture, Inc. co-founder, John K Chan, AIA, LEED AP talks with Building LA Podcast host Sam Pepper, RA for episode 16 of the podcast. The pair talk shop about Formation Associations Atwater Canyon project, creating a “great retail experience”, John’s journey into architecture, and more. ⁠ ⁠ Atwater Canyon, an adaptive reuse project, located in the Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles, produces a mid-block passageway through an old market’s masonry shell. The design more than doubles the retail frontage and connects the property to municipal parking in the back. Formation Association’s use of existing material, experimentation, and the consideration of the local community increases the project’s commercial exposure, walkability, and creates a great retail experience. ⁠ ⁠ In the discussion John tells Sam, “Atwater Canyon was like a wholesale sort of reworking of the building from the bones on out, not in this kind of binary new old way, but really in a much more nuanced, sublimated way of transforming this thing from one state to the next. But it emboldened us to keep more and to learn how to work with that. And to learn how to create a conversation about that". John likens the experience at Atwater Canyon to the chef’s table. “When you look at the chef tables, open kitchen, the experience of food that we all love, right now, that same version needs to be happening in architecture as well. Member Spotlight: Tang Yang Principal, GSBS Architects Time is valuable. Why AIA? I’ve been involved with the AIA in multiple capacities over the years. In fact, I was part of the committee that published the first issue of the Reflexion newsletter in 2013. As architects, we have a hand in shaping the built environment through every project we work on and that’s a big responsibility. Whether we realize it or not, AIA supports every architect in fulfilling this big responsibility through outreach, knowledge sharing, advocacy, and much more. If you give some of your time to be involved, I think you will quickly find that you are getting much more in return. Favorite Utah space: There are so many great spaces in Utah, but my favorite space is Little Cottonwood Canyon. It has something great to offer at any time of the year, skiing, biking, hiking, and so many other experiences. It’s where I spend free time with my family and it’s also the location of my most memorable architectural project. Favorite book: The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov are the books I would recommend if anyone were looking for a great science fiction journey. Mantra: “Enjoy the journey as much as the destination.”
