Are we truly building a sustainable future, or are we just constructing facades? In the engineering and construction industry, we often focus on the tangible—structures, materials, and timelines. But what about the intangible? The relationships we forge and the shared vision we cultivate are just as crucial to our success. As an Architectural Engineer, I’ve learned that collaboration is the cornerstone of innovation. When we connect with peers who share our passion for sustainability and real estate, we amplify our impact. Consider this: every project is an opportunity to engage with diverse perspectives. By inviting input from different stakeholders, we not only enhance our designs but also foster a culture of inclusivity and creativity. Moreover, the challenges we face—climate change, resource scarcity, and urbanization—demand collective action. It’s not enough to work in silos; we must unite our efforts to create solutions that resonate beyond our immediate circles. So, how can we strengthen our professional connections? Start by sharing your insights and experiences. Engage in discussions that matter, and don’t shy away from challenging the status quo. Let’s be the catalysts for change in our industry. I invite you to share your thoughts on how we can better collaborate for a sustainable future. If this resonates with you, please like this post and share your experiences in the comments. Together, we can build a network committed to innovation and sustainability. #SustainableEngineering #Collaboration #Innovation

We asked three of our Built Environment Solutions experts: what advice would you give to a young #architect or #engineer starting out in building envelope restoration? Daniel Isackson, AIA, RRC, LEED AP BD+C, CXLT, Technical Director, Architectural Engineering: “Some of the main reasons we get restoration work are due to deferred maintenance or damage that was related to improper design and/or construction. Other reasons for restoration work being needed are storm- or fire-related damage. My main advice to young professionals is to question everything and take the time to learn why the building was damaged in the first place. In many ways, building envelope restoration is reverse engineering; rather than designing a building from scratch, you get to learn how it was put together and then the best way to restore it to prevent the damage from reoccurring.” Mike Lopez, R.A., AIA, Technical Director, Architectural Engineering: “Be a sponge, and be curious. Never stop asking questions of your peers, your colleagues, and other industry professionals. Also, establish a group of trusted friends and colleagues, even if they are considered to be your competition. There is a scene in Ted Lasso where he’s competing in darts and his whole monologue speaks to this, and I highly recommend it.” Mike Mahmoud Bahjat, ing., M. ing., District Manager: “Seek mentorship from experienced professionals who can provide guidance and insights based on their years of experience. Learn from their successes and challenges, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Building envelope restoration is a complex field, and learning from those who have navigated similar projects can accelerate your growth and understanding in your career.” Our #BuildingExperts offer a comprehensive suite of services to assist clients with their projects. A career in Architecture….It’s not quite as glamorous as the movies made out… There is a common perception of Architects and what we do that in reality seems to be quite far from the truth (most people think we are rich) …but what is it that perpetuates these ideas, is it how we are represented in film? If you believe the movies; 👉Architects are all men, apart from Michelle Pfeiffer in One Fine Day 👉Architects are principled and forthright like Paul Newman in Towering Inferno or Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men. 👉Architects are tortured souls and have a lot of dead wives (Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle, Charles Bronson in Death Wish, Liam Neeson in Love Actually) Whilst many Architects do have that leading-actor bravado the job is also full of area schedules, tiling setting out and being pushed around by clients and project managers. A common theme in many conversation I have online is about the disconnect… …either clients don’t understand what Architects do so can’t see their value Or …..students don’t understand what architects do so are dissatisfied when entering the profession. So it’s about communication (aren’t most things) or lack of. How do you think we get better are what Architects actually do? —— ♻️ If you found this message important, repost it so others can benefit too P.S. who is you favourite movie architect? —- I’m Chris, an Architect on a mission. I've often come across #architects and #designers who, when asked about the sustainability aspects of their projects, laugh it off with a quick "No, nothing next question please. It makes me wonder, are they conveniently ignoring the question, or does it intimidate them? #Sustainability isn't a burden, it's an opportunity for creative problem-solving and positive change. Let's amplify conversations that prioiritise sustainable practices and reclaim the power to lead by example. #Architecture #Writing #Sustainabledesigns

Perfectionism is not self-improvement. Perfectionism is, at its core, about trying to earn approval and acceptance. Brené Brown In architecture, engineering, and construction, striving for perfection can hinder innovation and creativity, leading to undue stress and missed opportunities for growth. Embracing imperfection allows professionals to take risks, learn from failures, and foster a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement, driving excellence in project delivery and personal development.
