number 1 tip for anyone seeking a new job, as I am: Ask good questions. Asking good questions when you're interviewing shows that you've done your research about the company, the position, and the industry. Plus you demonstrate competence in tangible ways that aren't readily apparent from a list a programming languages or certifications on your resume. Here's several I've included in my repertoire. Feel free to use them yourself, fellow #JobSeeker: -> How will you really measure success in this role? Because a lot of time the criteria feel rather nebulous, like "Increase stakeholder engagement" or "improve processes". Does the other side know what success looks like? -> What will you do to help ensure success for the professional who takes on this role? Because if they expect you to just knock it out of the park on day one, or be completely up to speed within the first 30 days, they've probably got considerably unrealistic expectations for the whole of the position. Far better to know and avoid that than jump in and find yourself overwhelmed. -> Are there any "taboos" or "third rails" within the company? You know, those suggestions that will get shot down immediately, because they've been tried before with enough resultant trauma that they carry significant weight, or they're some other department's pet project and can never be cut or altered? Because everyone has skeletons in your closet, and they're things that could cause a dramatic, traumatic breakup down the line if they get exposed. Far better to know about them early on and short-circuit their power to do future damage. -> Are there any orange flags you're seeing on my resume, or that have arisen in our conversation, that I can address to reduce your uncertainty before we end our time together? Because if there were truly red flags, you wouldn't be in the interview. With this question, you're admitting you might not be 100% perfect, and you're also recognizing that it's important to know those limitations. Again, like the point above, far better to have all the information out in the open than to pretend like reality doesn't exist and get blindsided later on. Often when I ask questions like these I get "Great question!", much more than when I ask what specific technological tool they're using, or questions about their competitive positioning or the thing that is keeping the executives up at night.
