The greatest journalists are anticipators. Their focus is always on what’s coming down the pipe. Elections happening 🗳 Laws introduced 🏛 Summits kicking off 🧑🏼‍💼 Products or services launching 🚀 And they have a knack for predicting how an evolving story is likely to play out. Where does this info come from? Newswires were my (not so) secret weapon when I was an editor. It’s basically a feed of future news events. Most papers report what’s happening today. A newswire contains stuff that’s about to break. Perhaps this might help entrepreneurs and creatives here. Every week on Monday (or every now and then) I’ll do a little look-ahead. It’s a few things that might be useful for creative entrepreneurs. To inspire and inform. Lifted from newswires. Happening this week. Here goes. 1. Well burger me 🍔 Residents of the US can look forward to National Hamburger Day tomorrow. In an ironic scheduling clash, it happens to coincide with World Hunger Day. It’s an evening when the sun is in perfect alignment with the city’s streets, which run from East to West. (29th May) 4. Trailer crash 🎬 The Golden Trailer Awards is a celebration of brevity. The event prizes the creators of trailers and teasers for feature films and gaming titles. It’s been dubbed, “the awards ceremony for the short attention span”. (30th May) 5. Reimagine that 🧱 The London Festival of Architecture, LFA 2024, celebrates its 20th year. It’s a whole month of events about the built environment. Head to the city’s leading cultural institutions for installations, talks and edifying experiences. The theme is “reimagine”. (1st June onwards) 6. I'm sometimes asked to share the books I have found most helpful for crafting an effective DTC campaign in the medical device space. I used to share such gems as: >> The Innovator's Dilemma >> The Robert Collier Letter Book >> Cialdini's work on persuasion (Omar M. Khateeb loves this guy) >> Christopher Lochhead 🇺🇸🇮🇱🏴‍☠️'s gems on category design. These have all served me well, but none as well as George Romero's definitive treatise on zombies: Night of the Living Dead. If you work in the medical device field in any capacity consider this film the key to future-proofing your career. This film teaches us two critical things about Zombies: 1) It's hard to know if they are dead or alive 2) They have a voracious appetite My proposition, kind reader, is that if your company is relying on a zip-code based physician locator to connect prospects with local clinics -- and drive revenue -- you've cozied up to a zombie. Let me explain. The common assumption for years has been that prospects are rational and obedient and follow the conversion path YOU want them to take. Which looks something like this: Paid Traffic> Manufacturer Website> Clinic Locator> Call Practice> Make An Appointment This DTC funnel is appealing and widely taken as gospel and.....HALF DEAD It was killed by search-savvy consumers who want to learn about a local practice before placing a phone call. After all, they are heading down a path that at the very least could burn up half a day going in for a consult. At most it means the people at the other end of the phone line are going to cut them open and implant some magical, wonderous device. In this context, doesn't it make sense to learn about the clinic BEFORE placing a call? Of course it does. So this is what lots of prospect journeys actually look like: Paid Traffic> Manufacturer Website> Clinic Locator> Google> Local Clinic Website> WTAF???-- Do these guys even do this procedure > I'm Gone Your clinic locator may seem alive because it's the best tool you have in your DTC arsenal, but it's HALF DEAD because prospects --being rational actors -- visit a clinic's website to build trust before they place a call. And in the vast majority of cases their experience with your product on the clinic website is a No Show or Major Disappointment. (I'll talk more later about ways to fix this) The part that really stings is that you have PAID good money for these prospects who fall out of your funnel. Turn one event into 2.8+ million impressions? New case study w/ Vin Matano 🐝 and Demandbase out now! - Follow our DICE framework to maximize your event ROI so you don’t have to roll the dice with in-person content. D-esign I-deate C-apture E-dit - DESIGN your event content plan before the event. Factor the RSVP list, influencer partners, and key marketing messaging before the start time. This will inform the topic selection and shot planning during the event. The more homework you do upfront, the easier it is to hit a home run at the event. IDEATE on content topics and thoroughly prepare. Be intentional and formulate a concrete shooting plan. This can include video topics, storyboarding, branding, and questions for the participants. You want to focus primarily on execution during the event, so it’s key to get the preparation in order. CAPTURE your event in a versatile manner. Now that you have your content plan, you can focus on 1) DOCUMENTING the event and 2) CREATING original content at the event. You want a fair balance of both so you can produce versatile videos (short form, interviews, hype video, recap, long form) with original b-roll. EDIT your raw assets into usable content. Think carefully about how you want to distribute the content. Fast-paced short form is great for organic social while more cinematic shots can serve as promotional reel for future events and sponsor activation. DO NOT post anything raw. Let's talk #Q4 planning... So in an ironic turn of events, particularly ironic because this is a video about planning, I initially filmed this video right at the beginning of October, ya know, the start of Q4, but then life happened - as it tends to do - and so I only ended up creating this voice over in November. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But no matter, we pivot, we keep moving forward. So let's get back to the drawing board. Pun intended. (Obviously.) I thought I would share my planning process for Q4. But first, a little background as to the why I like to do my content planning this way at the end of a year. We typically take some time in Q4 to look at the goals we set at the beginning of the year, and we evaluate where we hit the mark…and where we missed it. (And that’s okay, too! You achieved A LOT this year! Be proud of you!) But then all those projects we didn’t start, or the goals we didn’t reach either get crossed out entirely, or they’re just shifted to the next year. Because, let’s be honest - “can we circle back to this in the new year” season has officially started. 🤣 And this is because we tend to believe that it’s much better to start at the beginning, rather than beginning at the end, right?I But in recent years, I've shifted my perspective on Q4... I’ve also started to view Q4 not as a countdown to the end of a year, but as a window of opportunity where I can get two or three months into a project or goal when the new year rolls around. Because even if the start is messy and slow, because let’s face it, end of the year fatigue is a real thing -  it’s still a start! (I share a bit more about this in one of my linkedin posts, which I can link to in the comments if anyone wants to check that out.) What I’ve come to realize and what I've been consciously trying to put into practice this year is that the right time to start is not a point in time... It's a decision. 🙌 And so laying out Q4 this way helps me both hit the content that I still need to cover as the year comes to an end. But it also shows me where I have the capacity to start those new things. (This is important! Because burning out before we take a break at the end of year is not a great idea! And end-of-year fatigue is a real thing!😅) So to my fellow content creators, Q4 can be a hectic season, I know. So consider this your remember to create space for yourself to do the things that fuel your creative juices, or just to give yourself some breathing room in the so-called “silly season”. Thinking about “travel guide like content sites” in the AI + Google HCU + whatever hit comes next realm, and a few thoughts on going forward: EMBRACE AI NO CHARGE Go full indexing in the hope there’s enough resulting traffic to remain a going concern. Past iterations of this (Google Rich Snippets etc) indicate that while some traffic will result, it will be less than whatever preceded it. Prepare for a substantial—and steepening—business downsizing. EMBRACE AI WITH CHARGE In a fantasy world where the AI platforms licence content, it will be a poison pill. Milk it for the year or so they pay up, then prepare for the above-mentioned downsizing. BLOCK AI ENTIRELY Risk substantial to near-total loss of SEO-derived traffic—depending on how search shakes out over the next year or so, maybe sooner. PAYWALLS Have been asked about this a few times as moved TF to a paywall years ago. The hit to the hip pocket is real, as is a fall in rankings. The potential of this route depends on the site. If it has a strong community, or some very hard to find/compelling/niche content, then can be a smart move, but I can think of only one site in Southeast Asia that is well positioned for this (Vietnam Coracle: https://lnkd.in/g9qaQVTh ), most sites are too hooked to the drive-by traffic that aggressive SEO delivers to make this move and stay afloat financially. LP nuking Thorntree is the all-time-classic head-desk move in this area. PRIVATE COMMUNITIES A potential halfway house to a paywall. Does most likely necessitate building on another platform like FB or whatever, which entails its own challenges, but think can be a good indicator of the feasibility of a paywall approach down the track. PRIVATE NEWSLETTERS Ties in with the previous two. If the newsletter is going to be substantial in value, it is a truckload of work, and so will need to at least have a paid stream. As with paywalls, if the site doesn’t already have an engaged audience, getting drive-by traffic to pay for a newsletter is a big ask. Newsletter fatigue is real, doubly so for paid ones. Hard yards, very long game. PRIVATE COURSES The good old “if you can’t make money from it, teach it,” concept has popped up a few times from publishers I know. Think is a very high-risk approach, but is something I’ve looked at in depth a few times in recent years. Aside from it meaning I’d need to shave more often and not work naked, it also requires an entirely different skillset, a hell of a lot of work to do well, and conceptually is quite removed from the actual provision of traditional travel information. Most examples I’ve seen that appear to have some traction are focused more on the generic pre-trip stuff rather than the trip itself. PRIVATE PODCASTS Harder to make money from the newsletters. Discovery is an absolute nightmare. SOCIAL MEDIA No idea. I gave up and pivoted to mostly photos of my dog a few years ago. CLOSING THOUGHTS Interesting times!

Public information requests are increasingly becoming a focus for agencies across the country. Two stories for your consideration: 1️⃣ In the main story, the County of Sonoma is spending up to $500,000 with Deloitte to improve the processing and handling of requests which from their perspective has become a huge time suck. However, the article states that last year the county spent an estimated $125,000 on staff hours to handle requests. It is unclear if those costs represented the totality of staff hours spent responding to the requests. The candidate has submitted almost a dozen requests requests since Jan 25th. According to the article, the Texas Public Information Act allows governments to limit the amount of time they spend on a single requestor. Over $1.3M+ in Partnership Cancellations This Year: What’s Really Driving Them? Cancelled partnerships don’t just mean lost revenue for agencies—they mean lost income for creators too. While many assume cancellations are brand-driven due to performance or budget shifts, our data points to a different culprit: the creators themselves. So how do we know what’s going on? Strong CRM tracking and an understanding of why cancellations happen is crucial for adjusting budgets, managing profit-loss, and planning for the unexpected. Here’s what we’ve learned about creator-led cancellations: 1. 25% of cancellations are due to creator disinterest in a product or brand.   Creators need to truly believe in the product. As a result, we’ve shifted towards extended product trial periods and encourage brands to use paid seeding programs to build awareness and loyalty before jumping into partnerships. This is especially important for categories like ingestibles, wellness supplements, or children’s products, where creators may be slower to commit. Authenticity drives success, and rushing the process jeopardizes it. 2. 10% of cancellations stem from communication breakdowns. As the creator economy evolves, we face increasing communication challenges. Creators often cite missed emails or delayed responses as reasons for disengagement. While SMS is the last “sacred” communication channel, gaining access takes time, and overusing it could easily backfire. The digital noise is making relationship management harder than ever. 3. Just under 10% of cancellations are brand-driven due to misalignment with creator sentiment. Brands sometimes discover post-confirmation that a creator’s values or content don’t align with their own. In these cases, cancellations happen fast—often driven by concerns over brand safety. With the upcoming presidential election, we expect to see an uptick in brand-driven cancellations tied to political or cultural commentary from creators. It’s shocking to see creators leave substantial money on the table. I am excited to announce officially today LOOR Distro! LOOR Distro is best summed up with two strategic goals. 1. License and distribute our artists content to create more revenue for them. 2. Share funding and viewing data with other streaming platforms so they can make safer content acquisition investments. LOOR Distro is our way of taking monetization to our artists and our platform to the next level. By using our technology and the insane amount of individual data, both in watch time and most unique to us, funding data for our pilots and TV shows, and providing it to distribution companies looking for new streaming content. We are now beginning the process of taking this information, and connecting with the distributors we've established relationships with over the years and licensing user funded projects to other streaming networks in partnership with our artists. Basically LOOR is a way for the streaming industry to analyze data from an individual pilot without having to make an entire series order on a guess. It can prove to a streaming platform that there is in fact a market for content outside of the typical niche family-friendly genre. This increases the reach of LOOR content, and creates another significant revenue stream for us and the film makers as well. But most importantly it shows other family-friendly streaming companies content and data that can reach new audiences. And we have the data, not just the gut instinct. The one thing that LOOR has, that other streaming companies do not is individual funding data. The difference between viewing data and funding data has been tremendously eye opening for us and even surprising. For example did you know young adults with children are less likely to spend their money to fund new content for their preschoolers? In most all instances subscribers fund content for themselves and their age group over that of children's content. Yet, because preschool content is usually watched on repeat as background noise throughout the day the viewing metrics have skewed the importance of this content to the paying subscriber. Causing streaming companies to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on basically background noise that's on repeat. Kids content as background noise doesn't create loyalty and increases churn. Our viewing metrics and funding metrics are able to read these conclusions. LOOR Distro is something we've been working on since we started forming relationships and building the technology. Data has always been integral to every bit of code we wrote. But it's also the result of going to film festivals and meeting with others in the creative space. Talking to distributors and learning about their inability to to test content on newer demographics without significant risk. As journalists, we’ve long prided ourselves on being the Fourth Estate—the guardians of democracy, the arbiters of truth. We hold high standards of objectivity, independence, and accuracy, setting a benchmark we aspire to uphold. But let’s be honest: the media landscape in recent years hasn’t always lived up to these ideals. Without naming names, we’ve all seen examples where journalism faltered, even from institutions regarded as flag bearers of our profession. This isn’t a rant—this is a call for reflection and change. A recent study by Chilean scholars Claudia Mellado and Constanza Gajardo, published in Journalism Practice, offers valuable insights. They interviewed journalists and audiences in Chile—a country whose media landscape mirrors challenges we face in Indonesia, including high news consumption, low media trust, and the tug-of-war between profit motives and public interest. The study revealed a striking disconnect: Journalists prioritized objectivity, independence, accuracy, and newsworthiness—values rooted in technical proficiency and public accountability. Audiences, on the other hand, emphasized approachability, empathy, and the ability to communicate clearly and emotionally resonate—a human, relational perspective. Here’s the gap: Journalists believe audiences value the same traditional ideals they hold dear. But the reality? Audiences are seeking something more human. As one audience member put it: “A journalist has to be very approachable, especially during interviews. They need to build trust, be empathetic, and open to listening.” Mellado and Gajardo argue that these sets of values—technical and human—are complementary, not contradictory. For journalism to remain relevant and impactful, we must merge these approaches: maintain our professional rigor while aligning with our audience’s needs and emotions. How do we do this? ✍ Embrace empathy: Let’s move beyond viewing audiences as mere metrics. Understand them as people with stories, fears, and dreams. ✍ Redefine trust: Build relationships rooted in openness, not just transactional exchanges of information. ✍ Shine a human light: The world is becoming tougher and darker. Perhaps journalism’s greatest power is to illuminate by being human. As journalists, our work is vital. But it’s time to expand our understanding of what “good journalism” truly means. I keep seeing two numbers used to describe the size of the podcast industry: "Podcasting is a $2 billion a year industry." "The podcast industry is worth $20 billion." Can anyone tell me where these numbers came from and how they're calculated? a lot of agencies stall at $1m-$2m in annual revenue. here's why. first, many many agencies start as just 1 person who is really good at the thing that they do. that could be building product, design, marketing, etc. they're so good that demand starts to outstrip their supply, aka their time. when that happens, they have two paths: 1. double / triple their prices or 2. build a team and teach them to do the thing that they do well. there are a few dynamics to consider here. - the person choosing path 1 will make a lot more money take home than the person choosing path 2 for years. probably until the person achieves 4x-5x in revenue scale. that's because path 2 is lower margin. you have to build out the team that does the thing. then you have to build out the ops and overhead that stitches it all together. this can be very discouraging, and it's often much easier to stop building the team and just go back to doing the thing yourself and raising prices on your time. - doing the thing is a vastly different skillset and job than building the team that does the thing. people who are really good at doing the thing, often really like doing the thing. what they don't like is incorporating a biz, building a back office, chasing down invoices, doing 1:1s, hiring, etc etc etc. a lot of people find that building an agency isn't fun and what they learn is that they'd rather do the thing that they like to do. some of these folks take the contractor-subcontractor approach where they then actively do the work and subcontract out some of the boring bits. this can work out very well and ultimately results in a setup akin to the solo contractor approach where you have high margins but your topline is capped by your time. - scaling the biz means developing a repeatable sales & marketing motion. this is where, particularly, e.g., product, design or eng agencies, get stuck because the whole basis for starting an agency came from a surplus of word of mouth biz. ie they got the biz by doing the thing well, and they don't have the skillset for scaling demand beyond that. the way i think about it is that this agency exists because it does great work. word of mouth is a proprietary channel for this agency. how do you scale complimentary proprietary, owned channels based on this agency's 'secret'. i believe that the 'mistake' that folks take when they try to scale is by going after nonproprietary channels, which turns their agency into a commodity biz. sales cycles are longer and more competitive for customers that you have to introduce yourself to. you become a hubspot agency partner and you compete just as 1 of N agencies. ultimately, what's important isn't scaling an agency beyond $X milestone, it's about building the biz you want, doing the work you want, supporting your family and all that good stuff. however, breaking out of this range makes cracking $10M+ in annual revenue a real possibility if that's what you want.
