The Death of Critical Thinking Will Kill Us Long Before AI! This intriguing headline of an article by Joan Westenberg in Medium caught my attention yesterday. The author rues "We have witnessed a multi-generational decline in reading comprehension. We read less, retain less of what we read, and struggle to engage in critical analysis." "Without reading comprehension, we cannot thoughtfully process information and make reasoned decisions." True that. What we are witnessing all around us is the pull of bite-sized content and viral media, that is making us and our children browse, view, chat, share, and react rather than read to comprehend, think, analyze, and respond. What would it take to regrow the reading habit? 📚 What can parents do to ensure the reading habit is inculcated in their children? 😍 I love a bit of scientific research that makes me stop and think… Especially as I have often felt the benefits of... ✅ Calming music ✅ A peaceful home environment ✅ A loving word of support from a friend ✅ The magic rejuvenation of being close to the sea. So take two minutes out of your day to listen and feast your eyes on the research of Masaru Emoto and his water experiments which are detailed in his book ‘The Message From Water’. 🤔 Why does it matter? 🔷 Well, the human body is around 60% water! 🆘 If we spend our days in negative self chatter think about the impact that this is having on your internal structure when you consider this research. 🆘 If we spend our days stressed and that spills out into the lives of those we love through our ill-chosen words he shows that there is the potential for impact on everyone. 🆘 We already know from scientific research that stressed adults are more likely to create stressed children. I have always said the quality of our relationships is one of the most significant factors to impact both our physical and mental health. Along with the fact that we are what we feed both our bodies and minds. 😔 Is it any wonder that our children are struggling when they live in a world where they don’t have the skills to switch off the noise to calm things down to appreciate who they are and find where they belong? 😪 They don’t get to connect to nature and run free in the way previous generations did either to get out of their heads and the data overload, not to forget a need to escape many of the expectations and pressures they can feel from the adults in their lives who often deliver this unconsciously. That is why I do my work to give them the tools to navigate our modern way of living and create more 'Good Adults' with the skills to support them! 💖 I would love to know how this research lands with you and what it makes you think.
