The mobile gaming landscape welcomes a new player: Juicy Button Games! Based in Limassol, Cyprus, this studio has already secured a promising $3 million in funding led by The Games Fund (TGF). Juicy Button boasts a powerhouse founding team. Alexander Kravchuk (creator of mobile strategy hit Total Battle), Anton Sinelnikov (design director of Pixel Gun 3D), and Aleksandr Zaytsev (co-founder of Mighty Party developer Panoramik) bring a combined track record of success. Their previous titles have reportedly garnered a staggering $180 million to $220 million in revenue and a massive player base with 43 million to 190 million downloads across their lifetimes. The studio isn't wasting any time setting its sights on a new challenge. Their debut project will be a 4X strategy game designed specifically for mobile platforms. This genre is currently dominated by Chinese developers, but Juicy Button aims to break the mold and become a "worthy European challenger." This sentiment aligns with TGF's vision. Ilya Karpinskiy, co-founder of the VC firm, sees immense potential in Europe's game development scene. 📊 Games & Numbers (04.09.24 - 17.09.24) 🎮 PC/console games ◾️Sales of Black Myth: Wukong surpassed 18 million copies in just two weeks. This was reported by Daniel Wu, one of the founders of Hero Games, the largest shareholder of the game's developers. According to him, the game's development cost $70 million and took 6 years. ◾️Street Fighter 6 sales reached 4 million copies across all platforms. The total sales of the series as of the end of the first half of 2024 stand at 55 million. ◾️Sales of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are approaching 3 million copies, earning more than all other Warhammer universe games combined in 2023. ◾️Harrison Froschke, Senior Product Manager at Blizzard Entertainment, revealed on his LinkedIn the revenue of Diablo IV. The game has surpassed $1 billion in earnings, with $150 million coming from microtransactions. Blizzard had officially reported that the game earned $666 million in its first 5 days of sales. ◾️More than 1 million people have played Citizen Sleeper. The studio and publisher (Fellow Traveller) proudly shared this on their social media. ◾️Released on August 15, shapez 2 has already sold 260,000 copies. In the first week, the game was purchased 70,500 times. It launched with 330,000 wishlist entries. ◾️Earth Defence Force 6, released in September 2022, has sold 550,000 copies in two years. 📱Mobile games ◾️According to Appfigures, the gross revenue of Royal Match has reached $3 billion. The previous billion was achieved in January this year, and the game has surpassed 300 million downloads. ◾️Sensor Tower reports that The Last War: Survival has earned over $900 million since its release. 30.4% of that amount came from the US, 22.9% from South Korea, and 12.4% from Japan. The RPD (revenue per download) in South Korea is $53, the highest among all countries. Additionally, The Last War: Survival accounts for 30% of the revenue from strategy games in South Korea. ◾️In its first year, Monster Hunter Now has earned over $225 million, according to data from AppMagic. ◾️Trivia Crack by Etermax has been downloaded more than 800 million times. It took 11 years to reach this milestone. ◾️Using AppMagic, mobilegamer.biz found that games from Netflix Games have been downloaded more than 210 million times. The leader is GTA: San Andreas with 25.2 million downloads. ◾️Infinity Nikki by Infold Games has surpassed 14 million pre-registrations. 📊 Games & Numbers (18.09.24 - 01.10.24) 🎮 PC/console games ◾️According to Video Game Insights estimates, Black Myth: Wukong is the best-selling game on Steam in 2024, with over 20 million copies sold. ◾️More than 14 million people have played Football Manager 24. This number reflects player counts, not sales, as the game was available through subscription services. ◾️The total sales of Ghost of Tsushima exceed 13 million copies. Recently, Sucker Punch announced a sequel to the series: Ghost of Yōtei. ◾️Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the second most successful new release in the European market in 2024. According to GSD, only Helldivers II performed better. ◾️The meditative platformer GRIS, published by Devolver Digital, has been purchased over 3 million times since its release in December 2018. ◾️Manor Lords has sold over 2.5 million copies since its release on April 16, 2024. ◾️Revenue from the VR shooter Ghosts of Tabor has surpassed $20 million, as reported by the developers themselves. ◾️In the first 3 days of sales, Frostpunk 2 sold 350,000 copies. ◾️Sales of Dragon Age: Inquisition has exceeded 12 million copies. While many considered the game a "commercial failure," the studio disagrees. ◾️Ampere Analysis estimates that Star Wars: Outlaws sold 800,000 copies in its release week. According to AppMagic, the game has generated $6.3 billion in revenue on mobile platforms. In its last year, it earned $931.4 million, the lowest annual revenue to date. However, this does not account for some users who may be migrating to PCs and consoles. ◾️Dungeon & Fighter: Mobile earned over $808.9 million in China alone and only on iOS, according to AppMagic. On its best revenue day (June 22, 2024), the game made $9.9 million. In September, the game averaged $5 million per day. ◾️Total revenue for Pixel Gun 3D on all platforms since its launch in 2013 has reached $210 million, with over 220 million downloads. ◾️Revenue for AFK Journey in less than six months has amounted to $158.3 million, according to AppMagic. Most of the revenue (over 70%) now comes from Asian regions, and in the first four months after launching in the West, the game earned $71 million. ◾️Pokemon Sleep generated $120 million in revenue over 14 months. 74% of all revenue comes from Japan, and 13% from the US. 📲 Platforms ◾️The mobile version of the Epic Games Store has been downloaded more than 10 million times. ⚡️ Gaming Insights from the reports of last week (June 24 - June 28) 1️⃣ Mobile users are not interested in AAA PC/Console games Thanks to the numbers provided by Appfigures & AppMagic, we see that mobile ports of AAA PC/Console titles do not perform. We're speaking of Resident Evil 4; RE: Village; Death Stranding & Assassin's Creed: Mirage. All of them are great games, but the best they've got is $212k in revenue and 10,6k copies sold (Death Stranding). What are the reasons? There are multiple reasons. First, the audience is very limited (iPhone 15 Pro users). Second, it feels, that people who would like to buy a $20-60 title on Mobile, also can afford a gaming PC or a console. Third, it's far from the best experience. However, we have seen cases when Premium PC titles performed well on Mobile. But most of them are session-based indie games. And for such titles, it makes sense to think of the Mobile version. 2️⃣ Steam is growing; 15% of users are using gamepads; users probably spent $19B on games they never played. There has been a lot of Steam news recently. Valve shared that the number of users that use gamepads increased from 5% (2018) to 15% (now). Xbox controller is the most popular one (59%). PCGamesN calculated that Steam users spent $19B on games they never launched. The calculation didn't take into account sales, and it's a big approximation, but still. Even if it's several billions - that's a huge amount of cash people might've spent differently. A beauty of the B2P business model, right? Last but not least - Steam is showing impressive growth numbers. It's been just shared at the latest Nordic Game. 3️⃣ Shadow of the Erdtree launched better than a lot of new games Stream Hatchet shared that Elden Ring's DLC had 46.2M hours watched in the first 4 days.
