Here are the 3 biggest cons of being a product marketing manager: Con #1 - No one understands what you do 🤷 I've had to explain what I do and what value I bring to every startup I joined after leaving Google (4x to be exact). It's like getting hired for a job that no one knows about except your boss and maybe the CEO. Con #2 - You can't please anyone 😬 The PMM function is a cross functional one and oftentimes you're pulled in opposite directions by different teams. For example, the sales team wants to oversell a product to close a deal but the product team wants to be conservative in what they can offer to set realistic expectations. The most critical skill for PMMs looking to jumpstart their career isn’t messaging, launches, pricing etc. It’s change management. Sounds boring but it’s the key to making the switch from a functional leader to an enterprise leader. Can you craft a compelling vision for where you think the organization should go? Can you communicate it simply? Can you bring critics on board by meeting them where they are, not where you want them to be? Can you take hard feedback and change tactics? Can you drive execution and bring energy and clarity to every interaction? Most important - Can you see it through? Get involved in any large scale change projects as early and often in your career and the impact will be obvious.

Overheard gripe about about intent tools: they’re a black box ⬛ Sure, one could argue that they help with account prioritization because some unknown person from said account consumed some loosely related content. we’ve seen over 400+ marketing activations built & deployed via komo this year. here's what we’re seeing at a macro-level, what we think is changing (and not changing) and how we’re thinking about the customer engagement space heading into 2025. - gamification still works. mcdonald's monopoly still drives foot traffic & sales, decades later. proof that "simple" incentives still capture attention. - active participation > passive consumption. spotify wrapped is clearly the gold standard here. the best campaigns put consumers in the drivers seat. - distribution is king. the best obsess over how to get their activations seen, not just made. wayne campbell was wrong, if you build it, they will not come. - offline—>online is growing. as tim armstrong reminded me on a podcast recently, 80% of the economy is still offline. activations that show up where customers are (the real world) and convert anon IRL shoppers/consumers into known contacts is massive. - owned audiences as a priority. relying on socials is inevitably renting space. the best in class are doubling down on 1pd and building owned digital spaces.

Had a great conversation with MarketWatch discussing how Zillow uses AI to assist buyers and sellers. We discussed AI and ML-powered features like Natural Language Search that allows users to express preferences naturally for customized listings,  AI for personalization for content delivery, and the use of AI to enhance home valuation through Neural Zestimates by analyzing unstructured data from listing images and descriptions. I don't take quarterly earnings for granted. 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 & 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝟑 GTM leaders and practitioners must analyze large amounts of market, product, and customer data for informed decision-making. They also need to communicate these decisions to key stakeholders and inspire action. While AI can help digest and structure this information, a human in the loop is still necessary for decision-making and effective communication with stakeholders. This is where synthesis and the rule of 3 come into play. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞? 💡 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬: Set aside a regular time slot at the end of every day to process all the information from meetings, reports, emails, customer discussions, etc. Look for key themes in the data and all the notes. Align them with your and your company's core priorities and decide which ones to filter out. Then, distill it down to the core concepts. (Pro tip: Keep an rolling doc on these themes, and use it as a source for performance reviews or planning later!) 3️⃣ 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝟑: As one of the fundamental rules of great presenters, the rule of three encourages communicators to present their messages and takeaways in groups of three. Why three? This number is large enough to encapsulate multiple concepts, yet small enough for the audience to remember. If you are new to this, practice this rule in everyday communication with your spouse, family, and friends when summarizing a story or describing a vacation. Sometimes my family teases me when I add a filler third point just to reach three 🙂 Don't force it, not everything needs to be in 3's.

The Product Marketing Alliance just issued their 2024 State of #PMM report.... And one REALLY telling survey chart has to do with the PMM TechStack. Dominating the list are core tools (analytics, reporting, CRM, collaboration, market research etc.). These are *great* benchmarks to help younger PMM teams decide where their gaps lie. But what I find interesting is that there are also a number of Demand Generation items on the list (email marketing, video marketing). Shouldn't these be owned by other teams?
