Given the connection between child care and the ability for #families with young children to engage successfully in the #laborforce, it makes complete sense that an increasing number of states are exploring how to best partner with the #business community on child care solutions. It carries the potential for a "5x Win": a WIN for #children receiving the benefits of #earlychildhoodeducation, a WIN for #parents and #caregivers able to optimize their careers, a WIN for #ece provider sustainability, a WIN for #employers trying to find and retain #talent, and a win for communities. #NewHampshire is among the states leaning in for a "5x Win" under the leadership of Joelyn Drennan of the Granite United Way, as covered by this Paul Briand article in NH Business Review. 👏 👏 Some highlights from the project's parent and employer surveys: 🔵 The bulk of child care (24.3%) is carried out by a parent at home, followed by a child care center (23.9%), a relative (12.2%), and an after-school program (10.3%). 🟢 52% [of employers] say child care support is very important for employee recruitment, and 44% say it’s somewhat important. Just looking at those findings alone seems to suggest that there is potential for employer-supported and/or public-private partnership contributions to strengthening child care as a #laborforce support. The Far Side of Fundraising Tip of the Week Transactional fundraising leads to high rates of donor loss. Most organizations lose 4 out of 5 first-time donors. The more rapidly and impersonally we secure support, the more we sub-optimize giving potential and the more rapidly donors depart. High rates of donor attrition, coupled with the continue contraction of giving households, spell long-term disaster for most nonprofits. Don't follow the transactional lemmings as they plunged into the sea. Adopt sustainable practices. You may be in the minority but you will help your organization survive and eventually thrive. This one requires that you closely to see who stands out in adopting sustainable practices.

I highly encourage VSHA voucher holders to explore the idea of participating in the Forward Motion FSS program. The Forward Motion Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program offered by the Vermont State Housing Authority (VSHA) is an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to build a more stable financial future. Designed to support participants in becoming economically independent, the program offers valuable resources, personalized coaching, and financial incentives. Participants work with a case manager to set achievable goals such as securing employment, improving credit, or saving for homeownership. One of the key benefits of the program is the escrow savings account, which grows as participants increase their income. These savings, often used for education, home purchases, or starting businesses, become available upon successful completion of the program. In addition to financial growth, Forward Motion FSS provides access to community resources, including job training, education, and support with budgeting and credit management. The program empowers participants to overcome challenges, reduce reliance on public assistance, and create long-term financial stability. By joining Forward Motion FSS, families can break the cycle of poverty, achieve self-sufficiency, and work toward meaningful personal and financial goals—all with the guidance and support of experienced professionals. This initiative serves as a powerful investment in both individual futures and community well-being.

Nonprofit organizations across Greater Hartford continue to face an increased demand for services while they struggle to raise adequate revenue. Some are working to meet this challenge through social enterprise: selling a product or service that complements their mission and reinforces the financial sustainability of the organization. To support these efforts, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving launched the Social Enterprise Accelerator in partnership with No Margin, No Mission, a national consulting firm dedicated to helping nonprofits increase their entrepreneurial capacity, revenue, and mission impact. The first cohort of ten nonprofits was launched in 2018; the second cohort of six nonprofits was launched in 2021, and now, a third cohort of eight nonprofits, launched in 2023, is engaged in the process. Collectively, the 24 organizations have generated more than $10 million in revenue to date from their ventures.
