I have always followed Gallup's employee engagement results closely. In Gallup's latest State of the Global Workplace Report, "Would you say you are 'thriving' or merely 'surviving' in your professional life?" is a key question asked, with 41% of employees responding they are experiencing a lot of stress. And, according to a recent University of Oxford study, at an organization level resources, e.g. management practices, work best to address workplace-related stress. Other key findings include: - Younger workers face a drop in wellbeing, signaling a generational shift in workplace satisfaction. - Economic factors influence employee wellbeing, with labor rights laws linked to lower stress levels among engaged employees. What can businesses do to counter this major workforce issue? Two major things: 1. Ensure that leaders prioritize effective management practices to create environments where employees can thrive. 2. Build a culture where every individual can achieve their potential. According to a recent report by Paycor, nearly half of HR professionals are new to their roles, having been in their positions for two years or less. This is significant because it points to a potential area that needs more support. With so many HR professionals still finding their footing, there's a clear need for ongoing training and development within our own ranks. The report also emphasizes that C-suite executives view HR as the primary driver of leadership development. However, they cite a 'lack of HR support' and 'outdated performance management systems' as key reasons for ineffective management. This underscores how critical our role is in shaping and supporting effective leaders within the organization. One of the standout points for me was the connection between effective management and employee engagement and retention. It’s clear we need to focus on supporting our own team members, investing in leadership development, and fostering a culture of open communication and trust. Ok, those of you that may know me, know I have worked in the HCM industry for over 20 years... and in those 20 years - I have been thankful to work for companies that supported my growth - because as I grow, the company grows (Thank you PNI•HCM). Thankful for the opportunity to continue to sharpen my saw and my knowledge to help others. Now the funny part... I have had my PHR and SHRM-CP certifications for many years. Never did I think - hmmm - what about payroll? My strength has always been on Employee Engagement, Training, Benefits, Human Resources... but isn't payroll at the core of HCM? I am not a test taker - and I have always believed my work speaks for itself. I am proud to share that after a couple months of personal issues dealing the loss of my dear father... I put my head down and passed my FPC exam this past Friday. Baby steps in your development leads to a mountain of knowledge.
