Exus Renewables North America has begun the repowering of the 139 MW Twin Ridges Wind Farm in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The Twin Ridges repowering project involves replacing the nacelles and blades of the existing wind turbines while retaining the towers and foundations. The repowering will result in a 30% increase in energy generation for the project. “As the wind energy industry faces increasingly complex obstacles to growth, including a nearly 3 GW interconnection queue of renewable energy projects trying to connect to the grid, repowering has become a path to help meet clean energy goals,” said Jim Spencer, CEO of Exus Renewables North America. “Thanks to these upgrades, the Twin Ridges project will generate clean, reliable and renewable power – and millions in community investment – to the region for decades to come.” Exus Renewables will invest approximately $200 million in the project, creating 150 union construction jobs. It expects to inject over $7.35 million into the local economy through the procurement of materials and services from local suppliers and anticipates that over the 30-year life of the project, more than $100 million will be invested in the community through tax and landowner payments. Vestas-American Wind Technology, Inc. will supply American-made nacelles, hubs, blades, and tower adaptors for the project. #cleanenergy

I recently spent time at #ClimateWeekNYC with leaders from across government and industry focused on the climate challenge, energy security and economic development. I was honored to participate in the Clean Energy Superpower Summit, featuring UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. Secretary Miliband illustrated his vision to drive economic growth and make the UK a Clean Energy Superpower and we at National Grid are proud to help support that goal. This year, we announced a significant step up in energy infrastructure investment – investing around £60 billion in our energy networks over the next five years. This investment will help unlock economic growth, create thousands of new jobs, and enable the increasingly digital, electrified, and decarbonized economies of the future. A Tale of Two 100% Renewable Puerto Rico Studies: Intro In April, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) published its new 843-page final report studying the viability of a 100% renewables electricity system for Puerto Rico—a detailed and interesting modeling analysis assembled by six different U.S. national laboratories. In a remarkable coincidence of timing, one of the most vocal and well-known groups of academic researchers focusing on renewables-only net-zero energy pathways recently published their own modeling results for a Caribbean-wide shift to 100% renewable energy systems by 2050, including Puerto Rico. Professor Christian Breyer and LUT University colleagues present an optimal solution for Puerto Rico that deploys over three times the installed clean energy capacity as the DOE’s model—including 17 gigawatts of floating offshore solar power—yet claim this pathway cuts Puerto Rico’s cost of electricity by more than half. Such striking differences between the DOE’s conclusions and the LUT University study highlight the stark contrast between a hard-eyed, rigorous analysis meant to provide useful insights to planners in an under-studied, disadvantaged region, and superficial, performative work professing to provide the same service. As this serendipitous head-to-head comparison indicates, this latter category of 100% renewables studies really exists primarily to pad academic CVs while providing a thin veneer of ostensibly empirical justification for ideological tenets. Over the past 15 years, a small but prominent group of vocal academics have produced dozens of such studies claiming that a 100% renewables and storage-based energy strategy can not only power “all energy in all regions of the world at low cost” but accomplish this even more cheaply than the existing fossil-fueled energy system. Whether leaps like floating offshore solar or the representation of Puerto Rico’s grid as a single point—lumped together with the British and U.S. Virgin Islands to boot—make the LUT study worthless to planners is irrelevant. Last week, New York's Public Service Commission approved a plan to add 6GW of energy storage across large-scale, community, commercial, industrial, and residential sectors by 2030. The plan intends to bolster grid reliability and resilience by expanding NY's energy storage programs to cost-effectively unlock growth. Pairing distributed energy solutions like solar with battery storage increases a customer's resiliency to costly power outages and ensures a stable supply of power to keep businesses running. PJM has cleared 204 #generation projects to the second phase of its new #interconnection process, designed to study 72,000 MW of mostly renewable or hybrid resources by the third quarter of 2025. The projects are among approximately 230,000 MW that PJM expects to study for potential #grid connection over the next three years under new, reformed rules approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in 2022. The reforms provide an efficient and timely process for handling New Service Requests. The 204 projects moving forward as part of Transition Cycle 1 represent 30,513 MW of mostly #renewable or hybrid generation located across 12 states. An additional 283 projects are moving through an Expedited “Fast Lane” Process. Together, Transition Cycle 1 and the Fast Lane represent approximately 56,000 MW of projects that will be through the PJM interconnection process by late 2025. While the new process is proceeding, PJM has 38,000 MW of projects that have already cleared PJM’s process but have not been built. Utility Leaders Unite To Invest Over $116 Billion Annually In Renewable Energy And Grid Infrastructure – IRENA The world’s leading utility companies have declared a joint intent to invest over $116 billion annually in clean power generation and grid infrastructure as they work toward 2030 climate targets. This announcement was made during New York Climate Week by members of the Utilities for Net Zero Alliance (UNEZA), which includes 39 partners, among them 32 of the largest utilities and energy companies. Together, these firms serve more than 327 million customers globally and aim to increase their renewable energy portfolios by 2.6 times by 2030.
