Neutral Zone’s outdoor teen music and arts festival curated by teens. 28 teens met weekly developing plans to recruit and select artists and musicians, curate the program, work with production, promote the event, and raise the required funding to hold the festival. The leadership of the group involved 2 lead facilitators, this was my role, and 8 additional leaders of subcommittees: Fundraising, Media and Merchandise, Promotion, Artist Relations, and Community Partners in order to incorporate strong youth voice and participation throughout the planning process. Leading up to the event, teens designed and printed the flyers that promoted the festival. The curators generated and hung over 2,400 posters in community settings such as schools, bus stops, coffees shops, and store front windows. Teens also promoted through Neutral Zone’s website, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook. LiveOnWashington.com was maintained to be a central place online for all information about the festival. Neutral Zone was also featured in in articles on Mlive.com, interviewed on 107.1 FM, promoted on 88.3 WCBN, and received a special promotional announcement on Detroit’s WDET. My role as a facilitator was to organize every meeting, assign tasks, write grants, and raise funds.
