Examining Character Strength Differences Among United States Air Force Officers
ProQuest
The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to determine if there was a difference in the 24 GACS - 72 individual character strengths between Air Force company-grade and field-grade officers. The theoretical foundations included the character strengths model and positive organizational psychology. The research question asked if there is a difference in the 24 GACS - 72 individual character strengths scores between company-grade and field-grade Air Force officers. The researcher…
The researcher recruited 80 company-grade and 89 field-grade Air Force officers on LinkedIn, direct messaging, and personal email using convenience, snowball, and purposive sampling techniques. All participants answered demographic questions and completed the Global Assessment of Character Strengths – 72. The results of 24 Mann-Whitney U-tests indicated spirituality was the only statistically significantly different character strength between company-grade and field-grade officers (U = 2730.50, z = -2.62, p = 0.009). In addition to these results, the researcher indexed the ranked order of character strengths for company-grade officers, field-grade officers, and the combined study sample that can be useful in future studies and comparisons with existing literature. This study contributed to the growing body of positive psychology literature by using a relatively new instrument to measure character strengths from a signature strength perspective and provided character strengths data for a previously unknown population. The study also provides data for the Air Force to inform their pursuit to optimize human performance and leadership effectiveness.

What started as an effort to define spirituality for the United States Air Force Chief of Chaplains office became a definition within the context of the Air Force while also honoring the historical definition of the term, but continued to aid in understanding what leads to healthy spirituality and the effects of unhealthy spirituality. There were existing references to spirit, spiritual, and spirituality in Air Force Instructions without an understanding of the deep ontology or mechanisms of these terms. Existing understandings of spiritual fitness advanced a conclusion without understanding the processes and attributes necessary for their realization. Chaplain Corps personnel, Airmen, Guardians, and family members needed a common reference for locating themselves toward the goals of spiritual fitness desired by the Department.
To fill this gap in understanding, we considered how the meaning of “spiritual” changed throughout history and informed a modern Air Force. We used the ontological framework of critical realism to clearly articulate a definition of “spiritual” that is inclusive, relevant, and practical for Chaplain Corps personnel, Airmen, Guardians, and family members that advances the positive Wingman culture of the Department of the Air Force. An analysis of the mechanisms that form healthy and unhealthy spirituality were provided in addition to some modern metaphors to guide spiritual conversations.
