🌍 Exciting News in Global Healthcare IT! 🏥 Epic has now emerged as the leader in hospital EHR market share worldwide, thanks to significant contract wins in Canada and Australia, according to the latest KLAS Research's Global (Non-US) EHR Market Share 2024 report. In 2023 alone, Epic expanded its global footprint by adding 203 hospitals and 24,117 beds outside the U.S. A major contribution came from Australia, particularly New South Wales, where Epic secured a deal to implement its systems across 191 hospitals, many of which transitioned from Oracle Health. Meanwhile, Oracle Health and Meditech also saw growth, adding 66 hospitals and 9,279 beds, and 43 hospitals and 6,686 beds internationally, respectively. Another notable contender, Dedalus, is rapidly advancing, adding 147 hospitals and planning for 31,424 beds as migrations finalize. Major contracts in Italy and Latin America fueled their expansion. This activity marks a record high with KLAS validating 186 EHR purchases across 734 hospitals outside the U.S. last year. In the U.S. market, Epic continues to dominate in acute care hospital settings, adding 153 hospitals and 28,788 beds in 2023. Notably, 77 of these hospitals switched from other legacy EHR systems to Epic, reinforcing its leading position with 39.1% market share. The expanding global landscape of EHR demonstrates a significant shift in healthcare technology, emphasizing the increasing adoption and integration of advanced systems worldwide. Using Salesforce Health Cloud, their platform will integrate with physicians’ EHR systems to retrieve relevant clinical data, facilitating near real-time PA approvals. This system will allow physicians to initiate PA requests during appointments, with responses provided immediately, potentially streamlining a typically lengthy process. Medical directors or licensed clinicians will handle denials or modifications to ensure patient care standards. Testing begins in early 2025, with broader implementation by 2026. Prior authorization remains a critical challenge, as it often leads to delays in care—78% of physicians report patients foregoing treatment due to PA issues. While Blue Shield’s solution offers promise, CFOs still face payer-related struggles, requiring strong documentation, contract negotiation, and regular payer discussions to mitigate denial tactics, especially as not all payers may adopt similar PA solutions.
