S&P: Medicare Advantage's growth a bad omen for hospitals - n8: and Many Health Systems Continue to Participate Under the Terms Dictated by the MA plans, Enabling this Abuse “Even beyond rates, MA adds more administrative and liquidity hurdles for providers. S&P pointed to MA plans’ “key strategy” of prior authorization requirements, which force providers to absorb associated refiling costs and sometimes keep patients locked in a longer hospital stay. That burden is exacerbated by insurers’ generally “high” denial rates, S&P wrote, which have led to instances where smaller providers without the resources to fight claim denials terminate their MA plan contracts and become more vulnerable to closure…. The report also notes that many MA plans have longer pay cycles than traditional Medicare. 🤔Private Equity and Healthcare seem to have a complicated relationship. A recent PitchBook report reveals some intriguing insights about PE investments in healthcare. Despite the buzz, PE investment in healthcare providers remains a small slice of the pie, making up less than 4% of the U.S. healthcare provider market by revenue. Interestingly, the growth in PE-backed providers has significantly slowed over the past six years. 📉 The numbers tell a compelling story: year-over-year growth in the number of PE-backed healthcare companies has plummeted from nearly 25% in 2018 to under 1% in the first quarter of this year. In response, PE firms are pivoting from traditional provider investments to areas like healthcare IT and pharmaceutical services. 💡 While PE investments continue to face scrutiny regarding their impact on care quality and costs, it's clear that firms are innovating and finding new ways to contribute to the healthcare sector. This is a tough one to read for our collective egos being an adjacent partner to the US Healthcare industry. The article says healthcare is "failing;" while that may be a little extreme, some of the quotes do not paint a pretty picture... “No other country in the world expects patients and families to pay as much out of pocket for essential health care as they do in the U.S.” “We are undersupplied with the things that people need most, including doctors and hospital beds." "The complex labyrinth of hospital bills, insurance disputes and out-of-pocket requirements that patients and doctors are forced to navigate put the U.S. second to last in administrative efficiency." All 3 of these quotes cast a bright light on organizations needing to take a deeper look into how they purchase healthcare for their employees, taking a more active role in strategic conversations to offset problems outlined above. Last but not least at Becker's Healthcare CEO/CFO conference - terrific panel led by my ECG Management Consultants colleague Steve McMillen, including Andrew Chang from UChicago Medicine, Patrick Cockey from Jefferson Health, and Maura Buxton from CVS Health. Topic: The Digital Patient Experience. Fascinating discussion in which the panelists agreed on many things, but productively disagreed on some topics. These are my favorite panel discussions, where constructive disagreement fosters truly engaging dialogue. Some of my takeaways (not attributed to any individual member of the panel): (1) The term "digital front door" can imply that we want everyone to begin their journey with us on a device or through an app; we really should be talking about making every channel accessible and seamless. (2) Improving patient experience is necessary but not sufficient; any solution should also simplify provider workflow. (3) We have a lot to learn from our existing patients and consumers, but also much to learn from those who choose NOT to engage with us digitally. #patientexperience #leadership #healthcare

Excited to share this new JAMA study with David Cutler, Karen Joynt Maddox, and my McKinsey colleagues which estimates that more than a quarter of the care delivered in the hospital setting today could be shifted to nonhospital sites without compromising clinical outcomes based on the view of 1000+ clinicians. This shifted volume, when extrapolated out across US healthcare system, represents a potential net savings opportunity of $113.8B to $147.7B. For health systems already facing compressing margins due to inflation and labor shortages, this represents another long-term headwind to manage.
