What do you call community engagement, and why? Public engagement, or co-production perhaps? Inclusive research, or participatory practice? What if I were to suggest it doesn't matter? We did research a couple of years back with The University of Manchester to help academics determine where they might start their own journey, examining the difference between different practices and how to evolve your approach. “Building and strengthening bridges between important local stakeholders is a vital part of the solution to this puzzle. As someone who spent over 20 years in survey research, I’ve seen first-hand the power of research insight, often rooted in national data collections, in understanding people and populations. “Leading the British Social Attitudes study, for example, I valued its annual pulse-taking of a nation’s shifting perspectives. Yet these national snapshots can lack local specificity. Solving this challenge requires building and strengthening bridges between critical local stakeholders. “As Head of UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) creating opportunities theme, I can clearly see this national and local gap demands innovative responses. Capacity-building grants are key to helping nonprofits scale their community impact. Yet, when grants rely too heavily on metrics, they can overlook real community needs—creating a mismatch between funders and grantees, especially for Black and Indigenous-led organizations. Grantmaking isn’t just about writing checks — it’s about building trust, promoting transparency, and ensuring funding reaches those who need it most. Yet, for many non-profits and community initiatives, the complex and unclear nature of funding processes can be a huge barrier, sometimes even preventing these projects from happening in the first place.
