Whiskey is emerging as a popular investment class among HNW investors according to a new report by KPMG: 27% said they plan to invest in whiskey within the next 3 years, making it the most popular form of "luxury" assets. Whiskey interest is followed by art (26%), jewelry (20%), wine (15%), and classic cars (14%). There is a vibrant community of founders, from young former investors through seasoned financial services executives, building innovative solutions for the credit asset class. Over the last year, our team at OMERS Ventures has been meeting with dozens of founders, industry operators, traders, investors, and more to understand the nuanced problems facing this asset class. Last week, as a culmination of these efforts, we hosted a Demo Day for the OMERS Global Credit and Data & Technology teams to offer the group a unique level of insight gained as a result of being a Venture team solely focused on Fintech. Start-ups are building a wide range of solutions to address various phases of the investment lifecycle, from data management and diligence through deal execution and monitoring. From the customer names shared during the Demo Day, it is evident that the best asset managers are ready for modern solutions. It is clear that the growth of the asset class has far outpaced the development of supporting infrastructure, necessitating innovation. #privatecredit #venturecapital #fintech One of the key trends is the increasing need to accurately track complex, disparate investment commitments housed across a maze of various funds, data rooms, PDFs and spreadsheets. The digitization of deal documents, automation of reporting, and the establishment of comprehensive workflows with full audit trails are becoming essential. Additionally, there is a growing opportunity to integrate financial data for real-time vetting of financial statements, eliminating the need to wait until the end of the period and relying on borrower-prepared statements. AI is central to many of these advancements, unlocking new use cases and enhancing the management of complex, asset-based transactions. AI can efficiently parse through extensive documents, such as a 200-page credit agreement, significantly reducing the workload for analysts by 70-80%. However, it's clear the human element remains crucial for ensuring accuracy, as much of the information in these agreements is nuanced. The need for cross-party data sharing and collaboration platforms is critical, as transaction documents are often siloed within divisions or firms, leading to inefficiencies. Ensuring proper identification, permissioning, and security is paramount as the asset class continues to grow. There’s no better indication of product market fit than listening to well-established experts in a space talk with founders who are building solutions to address real- world challenges. Are wellness companies going to suffer as a result of the "PE Ozempic Diet" and have limited exit options as more Americans adopt GLP-1s? What about healthcare companies? Private Equity has also played a big role in funding healthcare service companies which may be similarly impacted as patients need less medical care [i.e. Primary Care, Specialty Clinics, Emergency Departments, Hospitalizations and Diagnostics]. On the flip side, GLP-1s could be the catalyst that gets more healthcare providers to accept more health risk and enter value based contracts. Value based contracts generally pay providers a flat rate per member per month, adjusted for the health risk of the insured population. If the health risks of the population decline, the payment decreases which means, widespread GLP-1s could lower healthcare costs for an entire population. How do consumers/patients benefit? Healthcare consumers would pay less for health insurance because the plan pays less for care. The lower cost of care means people pay less out of pocket in terms of co-pays and hopefully, deductibles and annual maximum. Healthcare may become affordable to the uninsured and underinsured. The questions that remains is whether the cost of GLP-1s will be low enough to facilitate widespread adoption and whether there are any long term issues that will negate the potential savings. #wellbeing #innovation #healthcare #transformation

Fin Capital’s Fintech CEO Pulse Report is out! We surveyed over 50 CEOs and C-suite leaders of private companies from our portfolio and the broader fintech industry during June and July 2024 to get a quick pulse on what’s top of mind for fintech’s leaders. Here are some key takeaways: Optimism in the Air: More than 60% of CEOs reported being bullish or highly bullish on the fintech industry for the second half of 2024. Regulatory Changes on the Horizon: CEOs identified Cryptocurrency, Open Banking, and Buy Now Pay Later as the top three sectors likely to see increased regulation by the end of 2024. Ever wondered why merged companies often have a higher valuation than their standalone counterparts? The answer lies in multiple expansion, a phenomenon where larger companies attract a broader pool of buyers and financing options. Investors tend to perceive larger businesses as less risky, leading to a higher valuation. For instance, if you merge three companies, each generating $1 million in EBITDA valued at a 4-5x multiple, into one entity generating $3 million, the new company might trade at a 6-7x multiple. This week Mikal Ventures brings you a 4-week breakdown of the non-US capital market with an emphasis on the Mikal verticals. Over the 4-week period ending May 29, a total of 1,545 new companies were added, with 101,688 companies included in the non-US Health Tech, Med Tech, Fin Tech, AI Tech, and Ed Tech verticals.
