I LOVE learning new things... especially when it comes to anything automotive... A customer called me and explained his story on this 2020 Lincoln Continental. Over the phone he stated that the insurance company was only offering around $50K for his car in a Total Loss situation, I honestly thought to myself that it seemed like a fair offer. But as always I asked him to send over a list of information so that I could do my due diligence on this particular car. Turns out this was a 2020 Lincoln Continental Black Label Coach Edition, 1 of only 150 ever built, and 1 of 1 built in the color/interior package he had. First thing thru my head at that point... "They WAY undervalued this car" Second thing thru my head... "Finding comps is going to suck!!!" I was right and wrong... the car was undervalued by around $40K and there were a few comps on the market to justify this number. In the end, I was able to negotiate $90,000 for this 1 of 1 car and I now know more about the Coach Edition Lincoln Continentals than I did before this file started... So what is an Agreed Value Policy and why would you ever need one?? Take for example this 1996 Ford F350 XLT... After a total loss situation, the insurance company came back and told the owner that his truck was only worth $13,132. The problem with that is the owner had more than that into just the 7.3L Diesel engine and suspension. When we sat down and added up the receipts, we found over $55,000 in just parts and professional bodywork. This didn't take into account the hours of labor he did himself on the Frame-off restoration and more than likely other expenses that were forgotten about or even the initial cost of the donor truck to start with. I found this on line at Business Insider: "I made two homeowners insurance claims in five years: for my roof and for some water damage. My insurance company dropped me after the second claim because it considered me "high risk." If I had known, I would have paid out of pocket. I know now that I should have asked more questions." To put it very simply, this is why you should have an insurance broker, who can guide you and discuss with you the short term and long term issues of submitting a claim. The most common reason I hear people upset with insurance companies is due to the payout. It’s not what you may think though. Here’s the scenario, insured submits a $20,000 repair estimate and only gets $5,000!  They’re furious. Often times they say, “How am I suppose to rebuild with just $5,000?  Insurance is a scam.” Anyone want to guess why this happened?  If you concluded their chosen deductible was $15,000, you would be correct. The deductible must be met first. If an insured chooses to save on premium with a higher deductible, that’s a great strategy, contingent, they have set aside the deductible come claim time. Bottom line, always have your deductible ready. Claims hit at the most inopportune time.
