“Working with Cheryl was an absolute privilege as a junior marketer. In the year and a half of working under her guidance, I grew in confidence, expertise, and leadership facilities and produced some of my proudest work. From rehauling a website to leading strategy around podcast marketing campaigns, Cheryl encouraged me to flourish and exhibited genuine belief in my abilities, which only strengthened my resolve to work hard. Cheryl is timely with her feedback, tactful with her counsel, collaborative in nature, and generous with her praise. She is the fiercest advocate and a devoted manager, leading with grace and compassion. In good times and in bad, she was dependable and was not afraid to roll up her sleeves to get the work done alongside her teammates. I spoke candidly with her about tasks I had reservations with knowing full well she would communicate these concerns on my behalf without hesitation. As a result, she quickly earned my trust as a manager for every moment she was in my corner. As a BIPOC female, I've never had someone believe in me and endorse me at every turn as honestly and selflessly as Cheryl. I also admire her as a fellow creative. Never have I seen as gifted of a wordsmith as Cheryl. She is a talented copywriter, copyeditor, and can whip up brand messaging at a drop of a hat. She is imaginative and celebrates innovation instead of shies away from it. She knows the marketing landscape like the back of her hand and I loved having her industry knowledge at my disposal. I appreciate her management style in that she honors her team's strengths and gives space to all those on her team to do what they do best. I credit her faith in others as the reason why being on her team was so successful productively and professionally. I left the organization we were boht a part of due to an opportunity I couldn't refuse but leaving Cheryl was the hardest part of saying goodbye to my time at Wambi. Cheryl reminds me of a quote from a show we both love, Ted Lasso, where the character Higgins tells his colleague Keeley: "A good mentor hopes you will move on... A great mentor knows you will." Thank you for being a great mentor and manager Cheryl and for supporting me in this new chapter. I feel lucky to have met you and luckier to have worked with you.”

What do you do if you're transitioning into product marketing and facing common challenges?
Agility is as vital in product marketing as it is in any type of marketing role. With respect to product marketing, equip yourself with an agile mindset not only with regard to release/launch dates, but to internal process changes, prioritization, and commercialization. Staying in constant communication with cross-functional stakeholders ensures you stay on top of any changes and adjust marketing plans accordingly. This is where embracing marketing systems like Hubspot and Monday as well as product systems like Jira are key to keeping all the details you need to succeed buttoned up.

What do you do if your executive role in product marketing requires essential skills?
When I first discovered my passion for product marketing, I dove into what other professionals were doing, what knowledge and technical skills companies were looking for in candidates, and what my weaknesses were in the field. I started upskilling by completing a certification with the Pragmatic Institute, and by reading books like Product-Led Growth by Wes Bush and The Pocket Guide to Product Launches by Mary Sheehan.

How can you demonstrate a strong sense of ownership in Product Marketing?
Establishing ownership in product marketing is a tricky thing, especially when you're coming into an established organization where product marketing is a new concept. In this case, it's important to: 1. Understand existing product & GTM processes 2. Develop rapport with existing stakeholders and communicate your product expertise to garner respect 3: Align with colleagues on ways product marketing can improve current processes that are a win-win for all involved.
