SPIRIT OF GALLO RE-ENTERS THE SUPER PREMIUM+ RUM CATEGORY WITH RON DEL BARRILITO, PUERTO RICO’S OLDEST RUM MODESTO, CA – JULY 8, 2024 – Spirit of Gallo is expanding its luxury spirits portfolio with a strategic investment in Ron del Barrilito, Puerto Rico’s oldest rum, first created in 1880. Under the agreement, Gallo will also become the exclusive U.S. importer. This represents Spirit of Gallo’s return to rum, the 4th largest category in spirits. Within rum, the Super Premium and Ultra-premium price segments have been the key growth drivers over the last number of years and are projected to grow at 8% CAGR by 2027. Ron del Barrilito rums are defined by their unique artisanal process that’s remained unchanged since 1880, hand-crafted in small batches using a unique, all-natural maceration process. Each batch is blended to match the taste, aroma, and depth of the original formula. The rums are then aged 100% start to finish in certified “Oloroso” sherry white oak barrels for 3 to 35 years to yield full-bodied and smooth rums. Nothing is added post-aging – no sugar, no caramel coloring, and no artificial ingredients. Here are some impressive highlights about OXXO: OXXO's gross margin per site stands at an impressive 44.1%, surpassing Casey’s at 41.2% and Circle K at 34.1%. Loyalty accounts for 36.1% of inside transactions (and 40% on OXXO Fuel), a significant increase from 34% just two quarters ago. This seemingly small change translates to a rise in active users from 19M to 22.8M, plus an additional 7.9M SPIN by OXXO customers. For context, Circle K’s Inner Circle has 6.3M members, with 20% of transactions driven by loyalty. Despite challenges in Mexico, OXXO’s international expansion has been highly successful. OXXO Brazil, for example, saw revenue growth of 88.9% year-over-year, with a 22% increase in same-store sales and the addition of 179 new stores. While most of the team was attending Groundswell, Kim ten Wolde was at the Regenerative Agriculture Summit Series LATAM in Mexico. The event offered the perfect opportunity to network with industry leaders such as Nestlé, Diageo, and Grupo Bimbo, as well as getting a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing RegeAg adoption in the insightful panel discussions. One of the key insights is that as long as it is profitable, farmers and enterprises are willing to change their practices; the bigger challenge that was highlighted is the need for a uniform approach when it comes to collaboration across the supply chain and a collaborative approach between the food enterprises to ensure success for the farmer. As Rodolfo Farias from Diageo pointed out, it’s crucial that we have traceability - and that starts with measurements. The risk of greenwashing claims is a significant one; the industry will have a credibility crisis if we do not ensure proper transparency, traceability and quality of the data. It is essential that every party across the supply chain is involved in making the transition to a more sustainable food system happen! Some key learnings: 📍Not all capital is created equal. Raising capital that will directly connect into scaling your business --> critical at the start. Capturing dollars to buy more product is not always the answer. 📍Given market conditions, be careful w/your valuation model. Do not overvalue as it will curtail 📍Margins must be a minimum of 60%, but shoot for 80-85%. Yes, #Beauty is among the most profitable industries. But also the most competitive. 📍CAC minimum should be 1/3 of the purchase. Make your "hero" project your highest margin item 📍Know your business economics. Make it simple. How much will it take to make $1? 📍The brand's marketing plan will evolve, weekly. But consider an annual plan that earmarks key selling situations that you can adequately support. 📍Don't sell product w/zero margin (this includes the larger retail marketplaces that take a large cut of the sale --> Amazon, Walmart Marketplace, etc.). [FYI - seeing TikTok Shop take a lower % as they push #LiveStreaming; just synch ur Shopify account to TT] 📍Be strategic w/retail partners --> Nordstrom may take a larger cut, but it signals quality to future customers not familiar with your product. 📍W/Amazon --> go 3PL vs. 1PL. This dual position significantly influences global coffee prices and supply dynamics. Recent data from the Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (ABIC) indicates that domestic consumption grew by 1.64% from 2022 to 2023, reaching 21.7 million 60-kilogram bags, which is just 5.2 million bags behind the United States.
