The Flare-On Challenge is a reverse engineering contest held every year by the FLARE team, and this marks its eleventh year running. It draws thousands of players from around the world every year, and is the foremost single-player CTF-style challenge for current and aspiring reverse engineers. It provides individual players with a gauntlet of increasingly challenging puzzles to test their ability, and earn a position in our hall of fame. Veteran competitors who have been following the live countdown over at flare-on.com may have already marked their calendar for the contest launch at 8:00pm ET on Sept. 27th, 2024. It will run for six weeks, ending at 8:00pm ET on Nov. 8th, 2024. The Flare-On contest always features a diverse array of architectures, but with a strong representation of Windows binaries. This year’s contest may be the most diverse ever, with 10 challenges covering architectures including Windows, Linux, JavaScript, .NET, YARA, UEFI, Verilog, and Web3. Yes, you read that correctly, there is a YARA challenge this year. The challenges are often designed to represent Reverse Engineering challenges the FLARE team has encountered on the frontlines of cybersecurity. If you successfully crush all 10 challenges you will be eligible to receive a prize, which will be revealed later. This crucial bit of gear will distinguish you from your colleagues who have not mastered the arcane art of Reverse Engineering, and will thus be an object of their envy. Your name or handle, should you choose to be included, will be permanently etched into the Hall of Fame on the Flare-On website.  Please check the Flare-On website for the live countdown and, upon launch, the link to the game server. Another Amazon Web Services (AWS) ReInvent is history and it was a good one. I was concerned on what AWS would announce and deliver after a lackluster #AISummit in #Seattle and so/so pre-briefs - but this time AWS execs decided to keep us analysts almost completely in the dark - so the Tuesday keynote of Matt Garman was a decent firehose of announcements and innovations (though not as wild as in the old days). Garman did well explaining the AWS offerings as building blocks. On the 30k foot level AWS changed it stance on two key topics: (1) Amazon and LLMs, it has changed Amazon needs an LLM - so Nova is here... the 2023 stance was 'AWS partners for LLMs' - and in the meaintime invested 8B into Anthropic - which was very present in keynotes, presentations and the analyst track. What made @Amazon revert? For me it is a good point to remind us that AWS servers Amazon - and it is cleay by early 2024 - that etailers need LLMs as well. Not just for customer service, but the UX for etail / ecommerce may become ... conversational. Next is search, Google is showing the way, Amazon will have to enable a similar search experience for amazon.com. And then tere are the support, internal use cases and production. The ability to generate images and videos is key for buyer engagement. But if LLMs are a must - where to build them. The new #Trainium2 powered UltraClusters won't cut it - so Jassy announced an AI super cluster, planned for Q1 2025 (which Anthropic will use as well) - and will enable Amazon Nova Premier - the 4th Nova model. Now couple Anthropic with Amazon Nova Premier - and you have likely a pretty good 'consumer' LLM. (2) 2 Pizza Teams vs the Mega Suite (in Uber Sagemaker) My year after year standard question to Andy Jassy would be - doesn't AWS have to bundle services, avoid the 1000s of service complexity, show customers repeatability (a challenge for references), and when might the whole myriad of services - even be too much for AWS to handle. Still doesn't do distributed tracing like I built at AppDynamics. Dynatrace also has tracing. This new Elastic solution lacks it. The rest of it looks pretty comprehensive > Elastic's full-stack observability experience for your SAP workloads

Sh*t happens, how your vendor reacts is what matters. Google Cloud had a recent high visibility outage. What has impressed me has been the company's transparency and ownership throughout. TLDR: In early May 2024, a Google Cloud incident impacted UniSuper in Australia due to a misconfiguration of the Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE) service. A blank parameter caused the customer's private cloud to default to a fixed term, leading to automatic deletion. Google Cloud worked with UniSuper to restore services and implemented measures to prevent future occurrences. The incident affected only this customer and one service, with no data loss due to robust backups.
