2 VIDEOS IN ONE WEEK?!? WHAT IS GOING ON? I am moving to a semi-weekly schedule, getting content out on Tuesdays and Fridays so keep an eye out there. If you are subscribed on YT you'll likely see the videos the night before! This thumbnail might land with a few of you and the rest of you probably had friends in high school! Helena was my jam. In my 3rd video we go through a Rest API call and saw some very interesting functionality happening when we made that connection. We took that output can started piping those results to Snowflake. This is probably a more realistic data pipeline example so we had to go down that rabbit hole. Next week we dive into some of the other capabilities of Alteryx Analytics Cloud and then the following week I am hoping at looking at some other Cloud Platforms. My goal is 2 videos a week leading up to Inspire and Summit! Snowflake's adoption of the open table format Apache Iceberg, also supported by platforms like Databricks, Google BigQuery, and others, marks a shift towards composable data platforms. This evolution will allow companies to choose from a variety of storage and compute engines tailored to specific tasks, resulting in better performance, reduced costs, and less dependence on a single vendor. Data API builder is now Generally Available | Data Exposed. Data API builder (DAB) is Microsoft's open-source engine designed to expose Azure databases to client applications and customers through secure, feature-rich REST and GraphQL endpoints. It's cross-platform, language-independent, and runs in a Docker-friendly container in any cloud and even on-premises. DAB is three years in the making, with thousands of engineering hours invested and stuffed with best practices. Best of all, it's free & as of this week, generally available. Did you know Azure offers numerous cloud components for free? 💸 I've just finished the first part of a new project focusing on the key steps of moving an SME e-commerce business into the cloud and exploring the benefits that come with this. In this first phase I built a small Azure data platform for basically zero cost, using Azure’s initial free offerings. Including blob storage, a SQL database and Azure Data Factory (small cost). I talk through these basic components that a company could use to set up the foundations of a new reporting/data solution. We often talk about the vendor lock-in associated with traditional SaaS tools here at Castled.io. One counter question we get very frequently is about the vendor-lockin associated with cloud data warehouses. Isn't Snowflake, Databricks or BigQuery essentially a SaaS platform at the end of the day? Well, no! The data tech is rapidly moving towards open table formats like Iceberg and Delta Lake. Data warehouses are essentially "super-fast" compute engines that operate on the data you own and control — there is zero lock-in.
