Sweet's Wednesday Leadership Thoughts: Navigating People Challenges & The Power of Working-Level Sessions I recently started working-level meetings with my operations team (Manufacturing and Quality) to align, address, acknowledge, and listen to communication and emotional barriers that I feel are holding the team back from being great and moving forward with purpose. While some may disagree, Leadership is about getting into the details—not just of the work but of the people behind it. It’s become apparently clear that some behaviors, like reluctance to share information or hesitation to ask for help, create silos and slow our progress. How do we address these patterns without discouraging openness? How do we shift these habits to align with a culture that values transparency and collaboration? I reflect on a book that was in line with my situation, Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, which reminds me that “when dealing with people, you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion.” Recognizing the emotional roots behind these behaviors is the first step in letting the team safely and openly communicate the frustrations and issues at hand. In sessions, we’ve had some tough conversations about these misalignments. When these moments arise, I plan to work closely with the individuals/teams involved to understand the underlying concerns and guide them toward a more open and proactive approach. It’s about balance... accountability with support—holding people to the standards while ensuring they feel and know they are empowered to grow. The trust factor is also another sticking point that I have been driving home; I can't recall where I read/heard it, but when someone pushes you, is there a level of trust knowing it is coming from a good place to make one a better leader and showing that they care about you? So I am left asking myself if we are fostering that level of trust where team member feels safe enough to change and acknowledge that element of trust. There have been successes in my question. In a session, a team member from manufacturing finally voiced a concern they’d been holding back on. The small breakthrough allowed us to address the issue collectively and move forward together with action. It’s a reminder that even when behaviors need adjustment, building trust and creating space for honest dialogue are key to driving positive change. Working through these dynamics isn’t simple, but it’s essential. The more we lean into these conversations and align our behaviors with our shared goals, the stronger our teams become and consistently reaffirm the behaviors. For all the leaders, this is a great perspective to consider when challenged with improving & positively impacting your team's collective culture. Teams work great together when they know Monday morning, they have a Leader that makes them feel appreciated and recognized for their efforts. Building your team up has a bigger impact than just in the workplace.

I believe in leveraging your strengths when you’re in the workplace. Yes we all have weaknesses and strengths but when we focus too much on the weaknesses we are actually doing a disservice to ourselves and not leading with positivity. Your strengths are what you bring to your team. Everyone has different strengths and when you know them you can work together towards your common goal more effectively. 🚀 What are these teams so happy about? 🚀 The opportunity to increase their problem-solving skills and work more effectively through the 8D Problem Solving methodology! I had an amazing time working with these teams at our El Cajon Repair site last week! Their enthusiasm and engagement during the training were truly inspiring. They did a fantastic job applying their new knowledge to site-specific issues. Each group formed a cross-functional problem-solving team (D1) to tackle long-standing quality and productivity issues in their value stream. Unlike many problem-solving teams, these groups dedicated significant time to developing their Problem Statements (D2). They performed thorough data analysis and utilized the 5W-2H method, along with an Is/Is Not matrix, to create factual and objective Problem Statements that clearly defined the scope of their work. I can’t wait to follow up with these teams in 30 days to see the impact of their Corrective Actions (D5)! Patricia Jones, what can I say? My intelligent colleagues will totally get this post.  Though I take in select reads, feeds, and write daily, I rarely post in L-I other than celebrating member’s successes.  In that spirit, I am celebrating my daughter, Jessica’s achievements.  Humble, focused, and a patiently understanding problem-solver, some of her accomplishments include:  NCAA Division 1 Athlete, Dean's List 5 years running, current GPA 3.9, Master of Science and Biology with a concentration of Biomedical Sciences, Quillen School of Medicine, Captain of the women’s Track and Field Team, 21 all SoCon Performances, 13 Podium Finishes, Institution records for 4x400M Relay and Distance Medley Relay, Commissioner Metals, community volunteer service, Graduate Assistant, Counselor and Teaching Assistant for STEM students under the Governor’s School of Integration of Biological and Statistical Sciences at ETSU. Recently, our family was invited to join a video conference of her master’s thesis defense.  While the medical and biological terms were beyond my vernacular, the statistical analysis of her bio experiments was being spoken in my native language. The PhD panel questioned how she validated her hypothesis against observed test data. I involuntarily unmuted for about one full second before sitting back down.  Then, Jessica successfully demonstrated her null hypothesis with a p-value of lower than 0.05, explaining this p-value was generally sufficient to prove statistical significance.  I was in engineering ecstasy. #ProudDad  #GoTheDistance  #Overcome&Achieve
