📢 IAM/Boeing Contract Proposal 2024 Update: Boeing has presented an updated contract proposal for its membership, which the IAM union leadership has endorsed and is recommending to members for consideration. This offer includes several significant enhancements from previous agreements: A 38% General Wage Increase (GWI) over four years, structured at 13%, 9%, 9%, and 7%, resulting in a total increase of 43.65% across the contract. A $12,000 ratification bonus that can be allocated as a paycheck contribution, directed to a 401K, or a combination of both—allowing flexibility for members. Union leaders recognize this offer as a pivotal outcome of the recent strike efforts and recommend it as a strong next step for members. The Federal Aviation Administration will require air traffic controllers to take more rest between shifts to reduce fatigue - Starting in July, they will be required to take 10 hours off between shifts and 12 hours off before midnight shifts - The changes are based on recommendations from an expert panel on fatigue the agency commissioned last December - They recommended air traffic controllers' schedules be changed to incorporate sleep and circadian principles. Philip B. Crosby (1926-2001) was a corporate vice president for quality at International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) for 14 years after working his way up from line inspector. After leaving ITT, he established Phil Crosby Associates in 1979 to develop and offer training program, he is also an author of several books. His book "Quality is Free" sold about one million copies and was largely responsible in bringing quality to the attention of top corporate managers in US. Crosby's Absolutes of Quality Management include: 1. Quality means conformance to requirements, not elegance or over compliance --- Non-conformance must be clearly stated so that they cannot be misunderstood. 2. There is no such thing as a quality problem --- quality issues originate from functional department. The role of quality dept should be to measure conformance, report results, and provide leadership and support to drive quality improvements. 3. There is no such thing as economics of quality; doing the job right the first time is always cheaper. 4. The only performance measurement is the cost of quality, which is expense of non conformance --- He coined COPQ measurement 4. The only performance standard is "Zero defect ZD". Crosby's approach to quality is mainly behavioral, and emphasized management and processes to change corporate culture and attitude rather than statistical techniques. I can relate to Crosby's books and teaching very well, and is one of my most admired quality guru.

This Boss’s Day, we’re honored to spotlight Larry Hinebaugh, the driving force behind Vision Aircraft Records. ✈️ From his journey in the aviation records field to his thoughts on leadership and the future of the industry, Larry shares his unique insights. 1. What motivated you to focus on advancing electronic recordkeeping in aviation? I began scanning and OCRing documents in the early 2000s to use to text search for information I needed as a maintenance rep on pre-purchase inspections and 135 conformities. After seeing how easy it was to use electronic recordkeeping, I just naturally realized that it should become standard for us in the aviation industry 2. How has your experience in aircraft maintenance influenced your work at Vision Aircraft Records? Working with many different aircraft and aircraft records over the last twenty years demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that electronic recordkeeping was the way to go. I started Vision because I knew what other aircraft maintenance people were going to need in an electronic recordkeeping system in order for it to be an effective tool for aviation. 3. What are the biggest challenges and opportunities in the transition to electronic recordkeeping for aviation? I think the two biggest challenges in our industry are: To learn that electronic recordkeeping is not hard and provides a better way to do the recordkeeping that is required of us. To scan the existing paper records of so many aircraft in order to take advantage of having those records electronically. 4. What trends do you see shaping the future of aircraft documentation and records management? We need to embrace two major things in the aircraft documentation world: We need to move into electronic recordkeeping as a common way of keeping aircraft records, and We need to standardize aircraft records, especially Part 43 records, so that recordkeeping joins the many areas of aviation we’ve already realized add safety and efficiency to our operations. 5. What advice would you give to professionals looking to improve aircraft recordkeeping practices? Move into electronic recordkeeping now. You’ll be glad you did! 6. What do you love most/least about being a Boss? (Or, at least about being OUR boss?) 😉 The thing I like most is to see the creativity of the people we hire. Given the freedom to do so, people will come-up with their own ideas for a project or task. Continued developments have brought to light issues regarding the safety culture at Boeing. Allegations of retaliation against engineers overseeing design work on behalf of the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) have heightened public concerns about the role of the company’s cooperative, co-regulatory role with government authorities.   One case in point concerns engineers working on Boeing's 777 and 787 wide-body aircraft. According to reports in the The Seattle Times and other outlets, engineers faced push-back from management when they insisted on reevaluating prior design and manufacturing work to ensure compliance with safety standards.   This news underscores how the FAA, by federal statute, grants authority to Boeing as a “delegated organization” to complete essential safety functions that would otherwise rest directly on the shoulders of regulators. Such delegation makes sense. Aircraft are complex and an undeniable level of expertise rests with engineers at Boeing. But the costs of maintaining safety make it easy to imagine how a company could compromise safety for commercial interests. Let’s Talk Type Ratings! From my conversations, I know that there are varied opinions on the Type Ratings process for Licensed Engineers. Type Ratings expire if you don’t stay current with experience or complete recurrent training, meaning you then have to get recertified! Most aviation authorities require engineers to log a certain amount of hands-on experience on the type-rated aircraft within a specific period, such as 6 months of work in the last 2 years. You also need to do regular recurrent training, normally every 1 to 3 years, to ensure you stay updated on any changes in aircraft systems, safety procedures, and best practices.
