In this clip, Rüdiger Schulze, Senior Technical Staff Member, Observability and OpenTelemetry for IBM Z and LinuxONE at IBM, tells us that collaboration with the OpenTelemetry open-source community has recently begun, focusing on supporting OpenTelemetry on Linux for mainframes. They have established a Special Interest Group (SIG) to address OpenTelemetry support for mainframes. While #cloudcomputing is a great and quick way to accelerate growth and testing, and expand resources and availability, it’s important it’s not be equated with traditional on-premise #virtualization that limits you to costly configurations that may or may not meet your ROI targets and may not even be used for a few years (plus the need for someone to manage them physically—which may be required for sensitive sectors like banks and ID providers etc..). Cloud computing infrastructure allows you to “flexibly optimize resources” enabling modern trends like #microservices, #serverless, and more active #security_monitoring and #event_logging. They even allow you to have your own physical servers dedicated just for you (like #IBM’s bare metal configuration for your #VPC). If done right, these resources provide huge cost-savings and are as secure as any on-premise server can get. However, it’s important we get the basics right so we don’t miss out on these potential benefits and to educate ourselves as much as we can. Also to hire people who know what they’re doing.. I had an IT guy telling me that their cloud VMs are very secure on the web, because they.. they are accessed via SSH 🤦🏽‍♂️😳 Well, you better enable SSH if you’re remotely accessing a VM! But that’s not what your website visitors use to access your website! SSL/TLS is used for “secure transfer of data between the browser and your website”. #SSH on the other hand is a “secure SHELL” which is what you use to LOG IN to a remote server/computer—typically via a #CLI. Clear, sir?

Strong hire by storage startup Qumulo. Storage integrated with networking is a hot new sector. Qumulo just hired Douglas Gourlay from Arista who was key in their growth with Jayshree Ullal I remember talking to Arista 8 years ago and Jayshree and Doug saw the cloud growth and how networking scale would evolve. They nailed it. Can Doug bring that product mindset to turn a storage company into a GenAI systems play? We will be watching. Analysts Angle: According to theCUBE Research analyst Rob Strechay, rethinking storage and networking in supporting AI and machine learning workloads will play a pivotal role of generative AI in transforming data centers. All enterprises are emphasizing the need for high-capacity, cost-effective storage that can handle diverse I/O patterns across different stages of data processing.   “The addition of a product-led CEO like Doug to lead Qumulo into the next act, where unstructured data is the lifeblood of AI, makes a ton of sense,” said Strechay. “His focus and attention to detail on the product and execution sides will be key to Qumulo bringing software-defined storage services to the AI.” TheCUBE Research networking industry analyst Bob Laliberte thinks that data centers will undergo a quick modernization and networking and storage to evolve fast to meet the generative AI needs of new enterprise apps. “Modern IT environments and workflows are highly distributed and complex, so the ability to unify and connect to a single data platform across clouds, data centers and edge locations can drive significant operational efficiencies and accelerate AI initiatives,” he said.

I picked up a bit of insight from passing OCI certs last year, it was very similar to AWS in terminology . This definitely seems to be a strategy, they did similar cross connect with Azure, and multicloud is probably a better bet for Oracle. I suppose for many customers this will be an interim solution to get out of a DC and before a conversion to something more cost effective and cloud native, but given how hard that is presumably this keeps the license fees flowing for a few years or customers simply accept it and their existing skills/investments. interesting times! #oraclecloud #googlecloud #multicloud

NetApp delivered an enviable beat/beat quarter with strong guidance. My comments on the Qtr included in SiliconAngle's coverage, but here's my quick take: ▶︎ Killing it in All-Flash, ARR ↑19% y/y ▶︎ AFA should only grow w/ new A- & C-Series, announced last week ▶︎ Strongest cloud story of any storage company: ↑43% hybrid, ↑9% public ▶︎ Public Cloud Gross Margin grew to 74% from 66% year ago. ▶︎ Very strong Keystone as-a-service ↑55% y/y. ▶︎ Record Operating Margin 29% What we're watching: ▶︎ Enterprise AI tailwinds slow to arrive: will new AI strategy pay off? ▶︎ Public Cloud Gross Margin target 75-80% - on the way, not quite there. Overall revenue growth 6% y/y - solid relative to past quarters industry-wide but need to see competitive earnings over next few weeks to compare relative to industry. Stellar quarter.
