Great conference today from Capitol Weekly on the future of media in California. A couple of takeaways: 📰 News deserts are a crisis that allow room for disinformation. With the number of newspapers that are closing everyday, other outlets are trying to step in to fill the gaps, but there is still more that needs to be done. 📰 Newspapers are changing the way they approach journalism, focusing on the needs of readers and delivering more informational and high-impact reporting. 📰 Newspapers need to change the way they seek funding. What once was an advertising-driven industry is having to find new sources of revenue, especially with more readers turning from print to online. 📰 News coverage of the Legislature has changed greatly in the past couple of decades with less reporters and less access to elected leaders. My early takeaway from PRSA Oregon #CommCon2024 is that the public is facing a real trust issue when it comes to innovations like AI and other emerging tech (and in general). I'm suddenly reminded of my early career days when the “final” steps in the publishing process still involved red pens, proofreading marks, deciphering tiny, near-illegible scrawls in margins, resolving conflicting edits between departments and finally hyper-focusing to get the job done as deadline drew near. Sometimes the editorial process is messy and requires us to practice diplomacy (and at times, a little tough love). But association publishing is a team effort, and to this day, there still is no better feeling than getting a finished product out the door. #editing #writing #editorial #associations

Google largely got its way this week when it reached a deal with California lawmakers to help fund local newsrooms in place of a law that would have required it to pay them. If the bill had passed it would have been the US’ first such law modelled after Canada’s Bill C-18 that came into effect last year requiring Google to pay the Canadian news industry $74 million annually to run its content. Instead Google agreed on a public private partnership deal with the State of California Wednesday committing to fund CA's local journalism in an amount per year that’s significantly less than what it currently pays Canada. (California and Canada have similar populations). Another California bill that's making noise this week is SB 1047. If it’s signed into law, which could happen as early as September, it would regulate AI development and deployment of any company doing business in California that runs large AI models worth over $100 million. The tech giants, most of them operating out of CA, have naturally voiced opposition even calling into question the future of open source AI models if they’re held responsible for policing them under the proposed bill. The bill is expected to pass through the legislature by end of month. More to come on this soon...

Someone recently asked me about how to promote their upcoming industry award to top tier media outlets. My answer? You don't. Strategic PR isn't about putting out press releases about your company news and calling it a day. Reporters care about stories. They are in the business of getting people to read their articles and providing value to their readers. If you don't have a story that is going to resonate with their audience, then don't bother. Note, a good PR consultant can work with you to find those compelling stories that reporters will want to write about. Award wins can definitely be promoted in other ways (your company blog and social media for starters), but if you think reporters are going to cover your company winning an award, think again. #publicrelations #awards #mediarelations
