#30 New York Mets: The Top 3 Pitchers Drafted Since 2013 The Mets have shown improvement in 2024, but since 2013, their performance has been inconsistent. Prior to the start of the 2024 season, they ranked 14th in total wins, 5th in total days lost to pitcher injuries, and have relied on an astonishing 33 pitchers per season since 2021 to cover their workload. With elite talents like Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, and Steven Matz, the Mets were poised to have one of the most dominant rotations of the past decade. However, injuries shattered that potential, leaving a gap that top pitching prospects struggled to fill. The result? Persistent rotation instability and minimal contributions from their Top 3 draft picks since 2013, exposing deeper issues in player development and sustained pitching success. Injury Rate: 33% Of the 33 pitchers in this study, 11 have undergone surgery on their throwing arms, with an average time to surgery of just 196 innings. Notable surgeries include Anthony Kay (2016), Matt Allan (2019), and Calvin Ziegler (2021). Both Allan and Ziegler, drafted out of high school, required Tommy John surgery after logging fewer than 100 professional innings. MLB Pitchers: 3 Thomas Szapucki, David Peterson, and Eric Orze have each made at least one MLB appearance. Notably, Peterson has accounted for 98% of the 431 MLB innings pitched by the Mets' Top 3 draftees. Cost Efficiency – $/MLB IP: The Mets have spent nearly $70,000 per MLB inning pitched by their Top 3 pitchers, ranking second only to the Houston Astros in this regard. This includes nearly $10 million in signing bonuses for Justin Dunn, Anthony Kay, Simeon Woods Richardson, Josh Wolf, and Matt Allan, none of whom have thrown a single MLB inning for the Mets. While the Mets have actively traded away 12 of their top pitching prospects, the lack of returns on their investments highlights the ongoing struggles in producing and sustaining homegrown pitching talent.

Where is the future of Major League Baseball (MLB) headed? In 2024, a staggering 74% of all injury-related days missed were by pitchers, with arm injuries alone accounting for 58%. The financial toll reflects this as well, with MLB teams spending $686 million on injured pitchers this year—$561 million solely due to arm injuries. This rise in pitcher injuries has been building steadily for over a decade. Since 2015, MLB teams have spent $7.5 billion on player injuries, with $3.1 billion on arm injuries alone, which represent over half of all injuries. Pitchers account for 67% of the total days missed. The pandemic undoubtedly disrupted the player development cycle, but since 2021, days missed due to arm injuries have surged from 46% to 58%, and the share of cash lost due to pitchers has risen from 54% to 69%. We’re seeing the impact in the postseason: a shift in availability and depth of quality starting pitchers and a growing reliance on a revolving bullpen. It’s like watching a high-stakes showcase event where endurance and consistency fall behind. MLB knows there’s a problem; I’ve spoken with them on multiple occasions and proposed pilot programs to reduce injury rates. But changing course isn’t easy when the very dynamics that fuel this surge in arm injuries are embedded at every level of baseball. So what’s the solution? Change the rules? Change the game itself? That might be MLB’s simplest path forward. We’re currently on track for pitchers to account for 80% of all missed days in the league, with over 60% due to arm injuries. It’s absurd. Teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees have shown they can handle massive payrolls and stockpile injuries and still make it to the World Series, thanks to depth and top-tier talent. But this dynamic creates a widening gap when big-market teams can afford to overcome injuries, while most small-market teams struggle to develop talent and remain competitive. Ultimately, we want the best players to stay on the field, grow the game, and deliver the best product for fans. #injuries #pitchers #SaveTheGame #playoffs

North American teams have consistently been pioneers and trendsetters in the world of basketball. I've had the honor of working with some of the top European Elite teams from the Euroleague, Eurocup, FIBA Champions, and ACB for over eight years. And it's a remarcable journey so far, I need to admit! The University of Utah serves as a shining example and partially explains why North American basketball organizations, in my view, are often several steps ahead of elite European basketball clubs, both strategically and technologically. Consider how the women's teams and their coaches integrate live capturing and coding into their routines—it's not just groundbreaking; it's become the standard. This begs the question: can you name even two Euroleague teams that employ similar techniques? This highlights a significant opportunity for growth in our field. We have a lot of ground to cover to elevate European basketball to the level of North American teams. Thankfully, solutions like Hudl provide all the tools necessary to achieve these advancements. Let's embrace this challenge and make a concerted effort to incorporate these cutting-edge practices into our teams. It's time to learn, adapt, and innovate.
