I shared Jennifer Pahlka’s first blog post on the subject, but this follow up, and specifically the second half, regarding how not every ‘discovery’ phase is a success - *and that’s OK* - is crucial to everyone to understand: https://lnkd.in/eptnfZ_9 “The first discovery sprint does not necessarily lead to a clear understanding of the need, or sufficient alignment around that understanding. What you do then is stop and assess the situation… It may just be that conditions are not right to move forward for any number of reasons. So you stop. And likely then go again later. But not always.” “That the next stage is NOT inevitable is the entire point…the point of this system is to avoid building the wrong thing, and to invest the right amounts at the right times so that you build the right thing.” Lower the cost of failure. Focus on learning. Don’t invest too much, emotionally or financially, in a particular thing being successful - then you can enjoy it even more if it is.

To launch Viddy Studio we’re using the framework laid out in Jeff Walker’s book “Launch.” Specifically the Seed Launch. Before reading the book I wasn’t sure how we would actually get the word out, but he breaks it down so clearly that it made it feel possible and fun. One of the first things he recommends is to build up a list so you can send out emails. To do this we’re using beehiiv. If you have a product you’re trying to launch, this book is a game changer. So Delaware wants to be a “tech hub” 🏙️, but here’s the reality check: according to Code.org's 2024 State of Computer Science Education Report, only 61% of high schools here offer computer science 🖥️, and less than 6% of students are actually signing up. Meanwhile, neighboring states like Maryland and New Jersey are way ahead—fully funded 💸, with state plans 📜, and higher enrollment numbers. And what about the younger kids? We’re handing out Chromebooks in elementary school 📲, but where’s the computer science education to go with them? Kids are using tech every day but aren’t getting the skills they need to understand it, build with it, or innovate for the future. 🌐 If we’re serious about preparing our kids—and Delaware—for a tech-driven future 🚀, it’s time to go beyond talk and invest in computer science at every grade level. The discussion with Jason Fried, Co-Founder and CEO of 37signals, during a recent ProducTea with Leah episode (#42) was great. A particular one-minute segment (~14:20) really stuck with me. When asked about failures, Jason states: 🗣 “I don’t really think about failure. How does evolution work? Evolution is not sitting there using energy thinking about the wing shape that didn’t work. The wings that worked let’s make them even better...What’s working? Let’s do more of that. Let’s evolve.” This aligns perfectly with the concept of “slightly better problems” from The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. It’s a never-ending upward spiral. The key takeaway? Don’t ignore failures, but don’t dwell on them either. Focus on what works, refine it, and evolve. This approach ensures continuous improvement without getting bogged down by setbacks. #ProductManagement #Leadership #ContinuousImprovement
