Social media is great, but nothing beats in-person interactions. Reflecting on my time at AfroTech, I’ve realized how impactful these conferences can be and why I plan to attend them more often. Here are 5 key takeaways on how to make the most of conferences: 1. Networking is your currency – The most valuable part of any conference is meeting new people and expanding your network. Prioritize building connections as your North Star, and you'll maximize your time at these events. 2. Connections over content – Panels and discussions are great, but similar content is often available online or in recordings. The unique opportunity lies in meeting people you wouldn’t connect with otherwise. 3. Prioritize private events – Smaller, more intimate gatherings provide the best environment for meaningful conversations and deeper connections. 4. Exchange contact information – Don’t let meaningful encounters go to waste. Connect on LinkedIn, exchange emails, or share phone numbers to ensure you can continue the conversation. 5. Your online presence amplifies your offline presence – Social media can significantly enhance your conference experience. You’ll meet familiar faces from your online interactions and strengthen both your online and offline networks. Think about how you can apply these tips at your next conference to get the most value out of your experience. The next major events that I have on my radar are Art Basel (Dec) and SXSW (March). Last week, I had the privilege of participating in not one, but two Fireside Chats at AFROTECH. The first was with non sibi ventures and the inspiring Alysia Green of Chevron, and the second with the brilliant Cherae Robinson of Flybridge alongside the talented Tayo Adesanya of Lola Vision Systems. And let me tell you, those conversations left me #inspired and #hopeful. The biggest lesson I walked away with? The call for a better #EV driver experience is something we need to bring out of the #climatetech group chat and into conversations that include everyone—because this impacts all of us.  At ChargerHelp!, we’ve been doing the hard work—using big #data, reimagining #transportation, and thinking deeply about the future of #mobility. Sharing that vision at #AfroTech with folks who aren’t the usual faces in #electrification was powerful. These were everyday people, people with fresh ideas and unique perspectives, and connecting with them reminded me why this work matters so much.  It also brought me back to my roots. South Central Los Angeles has always been a source of #pride for me. If data could show, I started and submitted my Included VC fellowship application last hours. Hey there, to someone struggling to finalize or still hesitant about completing the IncludedVC fellowship application, based on my experience you are not too late. Of the 89 publicly-shared companies in the Summer 2024 cohort on Y Combinator, just 5 have Black founders. Here are three things YC can do to lead the way in supporting Black founders: Y Combinator is the Harvard of accelerators for startup founders. But not for all of them. 1. Give clear explanations to rejected applicants. Nothing drives a founder forward like clear, actionable feedback. It helps them identify their company’s weaknesses and, thus, what to work on to improve. This type of transparency would build trust with Black founders and ultimately encourage more to apply. 2. Partner with other organizations that already do an excellent job of supporting Black founders. There are many out there (my favorite being @goodienation),). Not only can these organizations offer diverse and innovative ideas, but collaborating with them would widen the pool of Black applicants. 3. Leverage the (albeit relatively small) network of YC-backed Black founders. Mentorship is a critical part of YC’s model, and I’d argue that the value of that mentorship increases when the mentor understands the additional challenges associated with being Black in that space. Black YC alumni can support new Black applicants on their journeys, and their referrals can help build a steady stream of Black applicants for future cohorts. I believe Y Combinator can more broadly uplift Black and underrepresented founders, but these three steps are a good start. Any other ideas? Let me know in the comments. Breaking News: VC Investment into Black Founders is Down...Again We've seen the reports earlier in the year, but this report from Carta and Peter Walker adds a little bit to an already longstanding conversation. In reading the full report, I have 3 main takeaways as it relates to the downward trend for Blacks in startups. #1. As Bad As it Looks, It's Even Worse Carta's report only looks at startups on its platform. From that data set, they determined Black founders received just 1% of unpriced venture capital funds. However, in a wider study, Crunchbase reported that just $700m went to Black founders in 2023, down from $4.9b in 2021. That $700m represented just 0.5% of the total $140b that went to all U.S. startups last year. https://lnkd.in/eRDXkM7Q #2. It's Even Bad for Black Startup Employees One of the big things Carta can lend to this conversation that others can't is what it looks like for Black people getting jobs at venture-backed start-ups. Well, as you can imagine, it's not good. In 2021, despite being ~13.5% of the population, Black people were just 2.8% of the new hires to Carta-using startups. But it got even worse in 2023, with just 2.3% of new start-up hires being Black. #3. We're Dropping Out of the Game Perhaps even more scary, and likely a result of these first two takeaways, is that there are fewer Black founders entering the VC game than there were 2 years ago. Black founders represented 3.9% of newly incorporated Carta startups in 2021, but that dropped to just 2.7% in 2022—nearly a third less. That's a big problem. Deterred by a lack of funding when they do start, and getting fewer start-up employment opportunities, Black people are essentially dropping out of participating in VC. Of course, there are many other ways to make money in the world—some with higher expected returns than VC, especially for those privileged to consider VC a plausible choice. However, being left out of markets is not a good thing—especially when it's not really Black talent making that choice for themselves. We know that Tech is going to continue being a driving force in wealth creation, especially with AI sucking up so much of the market. Thus, for any semblance of equal opportunity at wealth creation, Black people have to get a fairer shake at participating in Venture Capital. But the problem is that smart people aren't going to sit around and wait to be treated fairly. On average, they're just going to find a better, more favorable opportunity, even if the ceiling isn't as high. And that's a problem. For both Black people and the rest of the economy. Every quality report out there suggests that the systemic prevention of Black people's full participation in all areas of the economy is costing our nation immensely. And given the crazy times we're in, I'm not sure we can afford to maintain that status quo.

"The legislation would create a new tax credit for private sector investors that make equity or equity equivalent investments in, or that provide long-term patient capital (i.e., loans with a minimum term of at least 10 years) to CDFIs." Expanding American Entrepreneurship Act: "The legislation would raise the cap on funds organized under a 2018 sub-category of section 3(c)(1) of the Investment Company Act of 1940 from $10 million to $50 million, and double the number of permitted investors from 250 to 500. Together, these changes will enable emerging fundmanagers to raise larger funds."
