While fundraising on Kickstarter has a very low barrier to entry and is easily accessible to those who don’t wish to go down the traditional VC route, standing out in a crowded space and garnering buy-in for your yet-to-be-developed product is no easy task. To date, there’s been roughly 260,000 successfully funded projects on Kickstarter. On the flip side, there’s also been over 365,000 that were unsuccessful in reaching their funding goal. Even for the successful projects, most of them raised less than $10,000 in funding. Then we have an impressive outlier like Micronics LLC, who launched their SLS 3D printing campaign on Kickstarter with a goal of $100,000, ended up raising over $1.3 million, and achieved this as a scrappy 2-person operation. It’s no surprise SLA printing powerhouse Formlabs announced their acquisition of Micronics late last week. But will this acquisition move the needle in making SLS 3D printing more accessible? Or will this be another flop of a merger that seems to stifle innovation and haunt the 3D printing industry? Only time will tell. It's always about empathy. Over the years, I've seen many firms fade away because they were too focused on winning awards, insisting on their “proven methodology” when it wasn't needed, or clinging to their “house style” so much that everything looked the same, regardless of the product. As Jeff Burger mentions in the article: “You have to be mindful, as much as you might not like it, that the client has their own set of internal motivations, drives, requirements, necessities that they need to adhere to.” Empathy is essential at every stage of development, with every stakeholder involved. Humility always triumphs over arrogance.

This is a really big set of announcements from Formlabs. To date they have operated a walled garden for materials, severely restricting the variety of materials supported on their hardware in order to drive reliability. The balance of the economics of production being that facilitating reliability pays better than facilitating creativity. Its a perfectly reasonable decision but frustrating for materials innovators and designers alike. They redressed the balance somewhat with this set of announcements. A white Nylon powder is a first for them, adding easy access to colourisation through dying. Previously you could have any SLS powder colour so long as it was grey, limiting the capacity to produce consumer goods. The Open Platform Mode for SLA resins is logical and was happening outside warrenty anyway. Folks were risking it and presumably Formlabs were seeing loss of market share in resin sales and maybe machine sales too. But the OPM for SLS materials is the big one for us. The license is not cheap BTW - £10k-ish per machine (thats getting on for an additional 50% on top of the hardware cost in the UK right now) to be able to access the wider powder ecosystem is not a no-brainer for many, but for consumer products and production machines (more than R&D-focussed machines) it looks a recoverable cost over the machine lifetime. Without the experience of being a Fuse owner it feels like you'd probably need to be using the whole build volume to justify the extra X% per run cost. So its great that the gate to the walled garden is finally unlocked but we need to see how Fuse owners react to the opportunity. It'll take a little while for powder makers to adjust, but on balence it looks really good news and an overdue development as far as the community is concerned. We don't know if the SLS powders that are currently being made in the lab from our Nylon 6-based 0rCA® material will work in a Formlabs Fuse but at least now we can find out ;) #sustainablepowder #additivemanufacturing #3dprinting #SLS
