As Black women gain recognition in highly visible positions, they are faced with various misconceptions that impact their life. When entering visible positions or running for office, black women have to not only work against racial and gendered misconceptions but also present themselves in a relatable way. The balancing act puts high-levels of stress on black women that do not exist for other candidates. We’ll discuss those misconceptions and ways to fairly evaluate their candidacy. Excited to share that the 2023 impact report for LISC's Black Economic Development Fund (BEDF) is now live. Since 2020, with generous support from our investors, BEDF has committed a majority of its capital, investing $211.9 million to fuel Black-led financial institutions, Black-led businesses, and other organizations doing business in predominantly Black communities addressing economic challenges and contributing to closing the racial wealth gap. Through initiatives like BEDF, LISC remains at the forefront of efforts to enhance capital access for entrepreneurs serving communities of color. We have received reports of immigrants being discriminated when accessing food (at food pantries) and denied or not treated well when asking for disaster relief support. This document outlines strategies and recommendations that should be adopted EVERY TIME there is a crisis and/or initiative aiming at supporting communities. If you have questions, please send me a message or email me: [email protected] Here are some reminders: - BY LAW all information, services and programs should include language access when being funded by $1 or more of federal funds - Doubts about eligibility are real for lots of diverse communities - Write for 3rd grade literacy level (in ANY language). you want to make sure folks understand what you want them to know. - Watch your language and tone - Reduce barriers for registration. A 2-step verification process is safe but not helpful when people are struggling and may not have internet access, or a laptop or various devices -Identification is MORE than a drivers' license or SSN, can be a passport, a college or school ID, etc. Make sure you share ALL the times of ID you are receiving and accepting. If you came to my session. Deactivating the Scarcity Mindset yesterday during the Maryland Nonprofits #MANOAC24 conference you will know that our job is to release generational patterns and messages so that we can fully achieve our unique purpose. In the session, we discussed using our creativity and getting out of our own way. My challenge to anyone who sees this post is to write down every idea that comes to you over a 24 hour period. Grab a notebook and jot them all down. Once an idea is noted, in the corresponding column note how you feel about that idea. Are you sabotaging yourself with your thoughts? Are you immediately talking yourself out of the idea? Are you subconsciously telling yourself this can never happen? Or are you fully embracing the idea as message from your creative self as directional guidance? This will be super helpful to see what you do to support or discourage your brilliant ideas. Many black individuals in America are disillusioned with the political system and strongly believe that their voices do not matter. The demand for reparations is justified by historical evidence of policies that have perpetuated racial disparities and inhibited the economic progress of black individuals. One such example is housing policies that have historically discriminated against black Americans, such as redlining and discriminatory lending practices. These policies have resulted in higher rates of poverty and homelessness among black individuals, as well as limited access to home ownership and wealth accumulation. Healthcare policies have also had a detrimental impact on the black community, with disparities in access to healthcare and health outcomes persisting to this day. Black individuals are more likely to be uninsured or underinsured, leading to poorer health outcomes and higher rates of chronic diseases. Additionally, the ongoing racial bias in the healthcare system has contributed to mistrust of medical professionals and institutions among black individuals. Education policies have failed to adequately address the needs of black students, resulting in lower graduation rates, higher rates of disciplinary actions, and limited access to quality educational opportunities. Black students are often subject to underfunded schools, biased disciplinary practices, and a lack of resources and support, exacerbating the disparities in educational outcomes between black and white students. Criminal justice policies have disproportionately targeted and harmed black individuals, with higher rates of incarceration, harsher sentencing, and a lack of accountability for police brutality and misconduct. The criminal justice system has perpetuated a cycle of poverty and disenfranchisement within the black community, further marginalizing black individuals and families. Environmental policies have also had a detrimental impact on the black community, with higher rates of environmental pollution and exposure to environmental hazards in black neighborhoods. This environmental racism has led to adverse health effects and decreased quality of life for black individuals, further exacerbating the disparities between black and white communities. In order to inspire people to vote and actively participate in the political process, it is essential to raise awareness about the importance of civic engagement and the power of voting to effect change. This can be achieved through community organizing, voter registration drives, educational campaigns, and mobilization efforts. WHY WE MUST ENSURE BLACK VOTER ENGAGEMENT #BEtownhall We want to fully discuss the need to significantly bolster Black voter involvement not only in the presidential election but communicate the significance of participation in congressional, U.S. Senate, statewide and local races. in the context of this discussion, we will also review the following issues: • Gaining a clear understanding of the impact of the election on their finances, economic standing and opportunities, equal rights, and overall quality of life • Ensuring Black voters actively protect their franchise and take action to deter voter suppression efforts.
