Watching "AI in the Children’s Space: A Conversation with an FTC Official" with the amazing trio of Rukiya Bonner, Michelle Rosenthal, and Dona J. Fraser. https://lnkd.in/gXmcV5K6 My quick notes, bear with me: 1. FTC's interest: How does AI usage deceive the viewer? Is it clear what it is (the AI content)? Or is the content creating false trust through Gen AI deception. 2. What data is collected? Is the data used for training parsed so youth data is deleted? If youth data is collected, was it obtained through verifiable consent? 3. From my POV on this call, it seems: Federal Gov is more focused on research, partnership with operators, and learning from EU's AI act, DSA (for governance), and GDPR (for ops) before they create legislation. Meanwhile, States are proactive in this space - and in their quick response are somewhat overlapping rules (which may make it difficult for a federal approach?). 4. Imperative to consider children as a subset (automatically) of any reference in legislation/regulation focused on "sensitive data". 5. In virtual environments, they're focused on topics like "NPC statements vs NPC sales in-game and how that may be manipulative or challenging advertising laws. Or how deep-fakes are abusive of Generative AI and endangering youth (data, well-being, etc). Lots of resources: CARU's "pre-screening review", COPPA safe harbor (woot) & resources (they're great partners to support compliance), the FTC's various resources & current case reviews, NIST -- understand section 5, updates to COPPA, DSA, GDPR, the EU's AI laws, etc. Mad props to Dona Fraser. I've worked with her on/off for the last 15 years (from ESRB to now BBB). She's amazing.

Lots of food for thought in the International News Media Association (INMA) generative AI town hall yesterday. Curated by Sonali Verma, it featured contributions from Liz Lohn, Ritvvij Parrikh and Sam Guzik. My main takeaway was a reconfirmation that AI in newsrooms is happening now and it's happening fast. Sonali listed more than a dozen really creative uses of AI by publishers that are worth catching up with (I'm sure the INMA website will summarise the session). Sam reminded us that ChatGPT is less than two years old and that it took computers as a class a decade to reach the take-up that AI has achieved in just 24 months. Alongside the pace of change, what was clear was the mid-term shape of newsroom uses of AI and the business challenges. A couple of speakers spoke about the idea of "liquid content", which is a more user-friendly way of talking about multi-modality. This is a concept that not only every news exec, but every editor and journalist should understand. Basically, journalistic output will be available to users in many different forms –text, long or short, summaries or bullet points; video; audio – as standard. We will have to borrow from Burger King's slogan in allowing people to "have it your way". AI applications will make this easy, but we will have to get our heads around the fact that there will be large numbers of versions of a single piece of content. Business-wise, it seems to me that publishers are facing a protracted battle with the new AI titans. They will not want to keep paying for content (those that do) to train their models if they can generate the content themselves. Sam explained that solving "model collapse", which happens when models don't have fresh content upon which to train and start making more and more mistakes, is the biggest prize among today's AI engineers. As an industry, we must be fight like crazy to keep hold of our customer relationships and to do that we have to offer them better products and better journalism. Sam put it really well: "News is too important to just hope it'll be okay."

I'm torn on the seemingly non-intuitive outcome of this Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) and Kroger study on attention metrics. On the one hand, I totally understand why "viewability, which is a prerequisite for attention, did show meaningful correlation with incremental sales." On the other hand, I would think that when consumers pay attention, they're more likely to absorb the ad content and thus take action. Here's a theory. Viewability is boolean. If a consumer doesn't see the ad, it cannot possibly generate a result. Period. The likelihood of an action is zero. With zero as a starting point, any viewability is significantly better than none. It's a 0 to 1 change. Attention, on the other hand, is incremental. You're at 1, paying attention might bring you to a 1.1 or 1.2 (or according to the study, a correlation to lift of just 0.003 to 0.12). I can thus understand why the first (viewability) materially moves the needle and the second (incremental attention) is less apparent. When we launched TRUSTX eight years ago, we built in a 100% viewable guarantee for every display ad placed through the marketplace. Our mantra was (and still is), "if the ad isn't viewable, you don't pay." Brands swear by the results. Media buyers see consistently higher performance when buying the same inventory via TRUSTX vs. other exchanges. I'd love to hear some market feedback on this. What's your theory why viewability correlates to outcomes, but attention seems to fall short?

It's been a year since the Association of National Advertisers launched its groundbreaking and highly impactful study on supply-chain transparency. Since that time, the category of dumpster-fire MFA waste has been reduced significantly (although still not enough), and the media buying community has gotten a degree of religion when it comes to quality inventory. But you and I know all too well that one report does not change an industry. Only ongoing reinforcement and proof of performance will sustain the momentum. Meta's Oversight Board took two cases related to AI-generated explicit images in April. One of the cases was when Meta didn't remove an AI-generated nude image of an Indian public figure despite users reporting it. The Oversight Board has now recommended that Meta change the terminology it uses from “derogatory” to “non-consensual” and move its policies on such images to the “Sexual Exploitation Community Standards” section from the “Bullying and Harassment” section along with other policy changes. However, experts said that Meta needs to look at better user education, more tuned reporting tools, and ditching the 48-hour policy when it comes to addressing issues related to AI-generated explicit images.
