The Vermont #dairy sector, contributing over $2.2 billion annually, faces challenges with declining margins, prompting local farmers to seek innovative solutions without sacrificing precious land. Community solar initiatives emerge as an excellent remedy. Recently, two off-site #communitysolar projects were completed in Vermont, collectively generating over 2 MWh of renewable energy each year. These projects, benefiting six locally owned dairy farms, offer a cost-effective alternative. Comprising two 500 kW (864 kWdc) ground-mount solar arrays, situated on less fertile land in Newbury and Jamaica, Vermont, these solar projects aim to reduce fixed energy expenses, thereby boosting the profitability of dairy operations. 🚨 Advancing Clean Energy Infrastructure: A Legislative Win for the Climate Transition 🌍⚡ ACT is proud to share a significant milestone in advancing clean energy infrastructure and ensuring an equitable climate transition in Massachusetts. Working together, our Policy Team (Tim Snyder and Natalie Hildt Treat) and our VP of Innovation Alistair Pim, along with H.G. Chissell, Advanced Energy Group, National Grid, and Eversource Energy, helped shape critical language in the Massachusetts Climate Bill that will drive proactive planning for the future of medium—and heavy-duty electric vehicles. This new legislation, signed on Tuesday, directs utilities to accelerate infrastructure planning—like substations and transmission lines—to accommodate the growing demand for electrification from truck and bus fleets. But we didn’t stop there. Together, we achieved three key expansions to the bill: 1️⃣ Broadening the Focus: Beyond highway charging, the legislation now includes fleet depots as a priority, ensuring comprehensive infrastructure coverage. 2️⃣ Equity in Action: We expanded the list of stakeholders to include environmental justice communities and low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, ensuring everyone benefits from clean energy advancements. 3️⃣ Faster Timelines: Utilities and the Public Utilities Commission now face tighter deadlines to complete planning and approval processes, helping Massachusetts stay ahead in the clean energy race. This win was possible thanks to the dedication and collaboration of key partners in the energy and policy sectors. It demonstrates how thoughtful policy can lay the groundwork for a just and sustainable climate transition, and we’re excited to continue this momentum. Kudos to Duane Highley and the team at Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc. for seizing the benefits of the #InflationReductionAct to accelerate its transition to cleaner and lower cost #renewables. Power supply to its distribution coop members will hit 50% clean next year en route to a 89% reduction in #GHG emissions by 2030 ... with new resources additions focused on #windpower, #solarpower and #batterystorage with a small amount of #gas for peaker/reliability purposes. This is very much in line with the trajectory envisaged by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) #CleanPowerRules and shows that those rules do not force a "major" change in the industry, rather they run totally with the grain of what makes economic sense, and what is happening on the ground, while of course reducing harmful pollution at the same time. The bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 released by U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (I-WV) and John Barrasso (R-WY) takes a much needed step in accelerating the permitting process for critical energy projects in the U.S. As the legislation spornors's state (shared here), our outdated permitting system is stifling our ability to move clean energy projects forward, which in turn has adverse economic effects and inhibits our ability to reduce emissions. I'm glad to see these bipartisan efforts are moving toward fixing a broken permitting system that has shackled American energy production for far too long. #EnergyProduction #EnergyPermitting

Carbon Markets anyone? Washington Initiative 2117, Prohibit Carbon Tax Credit Trading and Repeal Carbon Cap-and-Invest Program Measure, which would have repealed key elements of the state’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA), was rejected by voters this week. Thus, the CCA carbon cap-and-invest program remains in place. In New York, the Cap-and-Invest program (NYCI) is slowly advancing. The Citizens Budget Commission recently released their recommendations for improving the proposed rules for the state economy-wide carbon market, citing specific concerns about economic impact and feasibility of reducing GHG emissions. "Project SunBridge will reach low-income and disadvantaged community households across the state of Connecticut, with a priority focus on affordable housing units, to allow for greater access to residential solar, increased resilience and grid benefits, and investments in quality jobs and businesses. The program has the potential to reach thousands of additional households through Connecticut’s existing solar and storage programs, avoiding CO2 emissions and saving Connecticut residents on energy costs. Connecticut residents will benefit from financial assistance with increased incentives, more accessible loans, and low-cost capital for solar and storage, as well as technical assistance for clean energy workforce development and community engagement. 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣… (or is it “out”?): An excellent review of low-income utility programs, from Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy. Among the findings: > Regulators have approved LMI discount programs in only 26 states and the District; > More than a quarter of U.S. households are energy insecure; > Climate change is making the challenge even harder; > Clean energy technologies, while helpful, are out of reach for too many. Sadly, too many LMI households can’t afford even heavily subsidized energy-saving tech.
