The IFRS Foundation and EFRAG published their long-awaited joint interoperability guidance describing the alignment of disclosure requirements included in IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and providing practical guidance for entities to enable compliance with both. We have consistently heard concerns from Canadian companies operating in multiple jurisdictions about the burden of having to comply with different sustainability reporting requirements. The guidance includes: 1. Mapping of ISSB and ESRS requirements 2. Guidance for entities on differences/nuances in specific areas of disclosure - some of the areas entities should pay attention to include transition plan assumptions, scenario analysis, industry-based metrics, disaggregation of GHG emissions, and carbon credit disclosures 3. The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) has announced new research projects focusing on nature and human capital. These projects come as part of the board's two-year work plan, which prioritizes beginning new research and standard-setting projects, supporting the implementation of IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, and enhancing industry-specific SASB standards. The ISSB is also pursuing connectivity between sustainability and financial disclosure standards and interoperability between its sustainability standards and others, all while engaging with stakeholders. The new projects follow the launch of the inaugural general sustainability and climate reporting standards, which many regulators globally are expected to adopt. The ISSB's focus on nature and human capital was informed by its consultation, while feedback from the market has led the board to not embark on projects related to risks and opportunities associated with human rights beyond those relating to a company's own workforce and workers in its value chain.
