SB Single vs. Multiple Custom Image Campaigns: Surprising Results! My team recently ran a test to see how single custom image campaigns stack up against multiple-image (slideshow) campaigns for Sponsored Brands. The results were not what we expected! Conventional wisdom suggests that multiple images would tell a better story, engage shoppers more effectively, and ultimately drive better performance. But the data told a different story: single custom image campaigns consistently outperformed multiple-image campaigns. Interesting insight into conversations between Google and publishers, all seemingly focused on yield optimization for their respective organizations with little discussion on improving advertiser campaign performance or return-on-ad-spend. Advertisers investing in programmatic digital media really need to take note of the continued lack of transparency, hidden ad tech fees, and manipulative pricing methodologies that are emblematic of this space and that are sapping their working media dollars.

Something the best ad agencies can learn from McKinsey -   McKinsey gives high-conviction advice.   Most times, it's right.   B/c they have an edge...their people and their playbook.   If a client consistently disregards their advice, they do something refreshing…   Something most consultants and agencies never do...   They fire the client.   TLDR - they prioritize reputation over revenue.   They'd rather bleed quality and have a reputation for outcomes than bank extra rev.   Chalk it up to a "third edge."   This is how we operate too.   It's not that we're never wrong…   We're learning every day, too.   But if you're not ready to move quick and learn together, we're not a fit.   B/c retainers with the wrong brand--no matter how large--aren't worth the cost.

What data exists showing if *social media engagement* predicts marketshare for CPG brands? There is strong data showing that market share is predicted by Share of Search (the volume of search queries for a brand as a proportion of all of the search queries for all the brands defining a category). This applies to a wide range of markets. My hot take on system1 and creative scoring; please, advertisers, spend the same amount on properly measuring campaigns as you do pre-testing, and you will rapidly accelerate effectiveness.... Cross media R&F, measured by an independent panel, linked to outcomes. backed up by / calibrated with periodic MMM and experiments. use it to validate what the pre tests tell you.

What. A. Rollercoaster. George London at Upwave via Marketing Dive does a masterful job discussing Google's reversal to now retain cookies after years of touting their deprecation. Quote: "The repercussions of Google’s failed experiment are far-reaching. The credibility of privacy-enhancing technologies has been tarnished by association. Many advertisers have doubled down on potentially less privacy-friendly alternatives to #cookies, or feel vindicated in never having tried to move off cookies at all. The uncertainty surrounding the open web’s future has accelerated the flow of ad dollars into walled gardens, ironically concentrating more user data in the hands of a few tech giants." This was a good read for anyone in the #digitalads space.

A wave of nostalgia descends - and also a lot of pride - while reading through the latest AI-aided advancements in the area of SEM; specifically in the area of "Brand search". As early as circa 2010, I had developed a Non-brand to Brand funnel strategy, which was put to astoundingly effective results for our multi-million dollar SEM client campaigns, at Performics APAC excellence center in Singapore which I had built between 2010 - 2015. One of the key cornerstones was the breakdown of Brand searches into finer, well-defined buckets - core brand, brand misspell, brand + product, brand + non-brand extensions - painstakingly (and to a large extent, manually) with exclusions defined manually, such that each bucket existed for a specific "role" in the customer journey on the bottom half of the funnel. Even before getting down to that was the constant scouring of actual kw queries, and constant induction of new queries & negatives/ exclusions. Now with AI, not only is the concept we developed is being used by Google, but also being simplified to a mind-boggling extent. Stuff that used to be executed with excruciating efforts by fellow architects and comrades Sankalp Bala Vineeth Kallarakkal Neelima Agsibagil Pankaj Dambhare Nisha Desai.
