What do you call community engagement, and why? Public engagement, or co-production perhaps? Inclusive research, or participatory practice? What if I were to suggest it doesn't matter? We did research a couple of years back with The University of Manchester to help academics determine where they might start their own journey, examining the difference between different practices and how to evolve your approach. So, for Black women especially who are embarking upon pregnancy and birth, or in postpartum, how can they advocate for themselves? What are people empowered to do in this moment?   JJ: That is a question I’m asked often. Firstly, I would like to preface my answer with the understanding that we shouldn’t have to save our own lives. Yet here we are. National Funding Opportunity Building Together: Equitable Systems for Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Mental Health NATIONAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR PRENATAL-TO-AGE-3 MENTAL HEALTH Perigee Fund’s first national RFP is inspired by the urgent need of caregivers, infants, and toddlers across the United States to access mental health supports. It seeks to fund state, tribal, or regional partnerships that share Perigee’s goal of making mental health and relationship-based supports more accessible for diverse prenatal-to-age-3 families through systems change. Building Together will make $2 million in new funding available, so that more places have more momentum to integrate maternal, infant, and early childhood mental health into family-serving systems. Request for Proposal Highlights - Building Together seeks to fund the systems change necessary for more babies and families to access mental health supports. - Each grantee will receive up to $250,000 total across a 2-year period. - Up to eight (8) total applicants will be awarded funding. - Opportunities for technical assistance (TA) and meeting with peers will be provided. I LOVE the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Epi Data Briefs that breakdown mental health prevalence by various social, economic, and environmental factors. Headlines below, but I strongly encourage you to take a deeper look at the brief. As a whole, about 1 in 10 NYC adults have depression (13%). This jumps to: 1 in 5 for NYC adults - aged 18-24 (20%) - experiencing food insecurity (20%) - who have asthma (20%) - who have two or more chronic health conditions (21%) 1 in 4 for NYC adults who - have above average financial stress (25%) - identify as bisexual (26%) - identify as multiracial (27%) - have ever experienced intimate partner violence (28%) Almost 2 in 5 for NYC adults who - identify as a gender other than cisgender (38%) - rate their overall health as fair or poor (39%) How do you or will you use this data? One way I use it: to demonstrate how the social drivers of health and access initiatives at United Way of New York City and the Department of Community Based Programs at Family Health Centers @ NYU Langone Health help address mental health. Kudos to Kinjia Hinterland and her team for presenting a wealth of data in an approachable, digestible format.
