  • The Conflict between Regulatory Agencies over the 20,000-Fold Lowering of the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) for Bisphenol A (BPA) by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

    Environ Health Perspect 132(4): 045001.

    Abstract
    Background:
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommended lowering their estimated tolerable daily intake (TDI) for bisphenol A (BPA) 20,000-fold to . BPA is an extensively studied high production volume endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) associated with a vast array of diseases. Abstract
Prior risk assessments of BPA by EFSA as well as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have relied on industry-funded studies conducted under good laboratory practice protocols (GLP) requiring guideline end points and detailed record keeping, while also claiming to examine (but rejecting) thousands of published findings by academic scientists. Guideline protocols initially formalized in the mid-twentieth century are still used by many regulatory agencies. EFSA used a 21st century approach in its reassessment of BPA and conducted a transparent, but time-limited, systematic review that included both guideline and academic research. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) opposed EFSA’s revision of the TDI for BPA.
    Discussion:
We strongly endorse EFSA’s revised TDI for BPA and support the European Commission’s (EC) apparent acceptance of this updated BPA risk assessment. We discuss challenges to current chemical risk assessment assumptions about EDCs that need to be addressed by regulatory agencies to, in our opinion, become truly protective of public health. Addressing these challenges will hopefully result in BPA, and eventually other structurally similar bisphenols (called regrettable substitutions) for which there are known adverse effects, being eliminated from all food-related and many other uses in the EU and elsewhere.

  • TEDx Talk: "How to Protect Your Kids from Toxic Chemicals" - December 2019

There are over 90,000 commercial and industrial chemicals currently registered and available for use in the United States, the majority of which have never been tested in humans for safety or toxicity. Only 5 chemicals have been taken off out the U.S. market since 1976, under the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA). The food industry alone uses over 3,000 different chemicals and billions of pounds annually of chemicals that have been grandfathered in as 'safe', under GRAS regulations. Water…

Water regulations, dating back to the 1970's are still in effect, regulating just 91 chemicals in over 160,000 water treatment plants across the U.S.. The textile industry in the U.S. and globally, uses millions of pounds of toxic chemicals annually. Home furnishings, air quality, cellular technology all have a "story" regarding regulation, testing, risk of harm, and safe use and alternatives.
Dr Cohen's research has revealed WHY adolescents and teens are THE MOST IMPORTANT demographic for environmental health information...they are developing at an ENORMOUS rate, they use the most personal care products daily than any other demographic, they are tech savvy and understand how to use helpful apps and websites efficiently, they are "body aware", they will likely disseminate this info to their parents and siblings, they will possibly have kids one day which will help reduce chemical and radiation exposure during pregnancy, they will soon be able to vote and help shape the politics around environmental policy and regulation, and they can help move the consumer product market in a safer direction, just through purchasing power. Chemical and radiation information is relevant for our time; it is a growing topic of awareness, and concern....but with adolescents and teens, there is opportunity to make a real difference at a young age, that will affect their health for the rest of their lives!

    Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder of unknown pathogenesis. In SLE, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs thereby involving multiple body systems including joints, skin, blood, brain, heart, and lungs. SLE has a wide variation in the symptoms, hence making the diagnosis more challenging at the time of initial presentation. Sometimes, the patient presents with Status epilepticus (SE) without prior history of epilepsy, as SE is common at the beginning in the course of SLE. In this report, there is a case showing correlation of seizures with SLE, without prior history of epilepsy. A 43-year-old female presented in the emergency department of the hospital with SE. Her previous medical and family history for epilepsy was unremarkable. The patient had high titers for positive anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), while other autoimmune workup was negative. A complete evaluation of the symptoms and investigations revealed that she met the criteria of American College of Rheumatology (ACR) for the diagnosis of SLE. Hence, physicians should be diligent with regards to the variations in the initial presentation and complications of SLE. With the advancement in treatment modalities of SLE, it can be managed successfully, if diagnosed early.

Integrative Environmental Medicine examines the history and changing landscape of our environment in the U.S. and shares up-to-date research and information on ways to reduce exposures and reduce health risks. This text explores the unique properties of many chemicals and their ability to deceive the human body's normal workings, affecting everything from thyroid and autoimmune disease risk, to cancer development, to developmental issues in children, and even the development of diabetes and weight gain through gut bacteria manipulation. We discuss topics of improving regulations and appropriate testing for chemicals, remediation of environmental catastrophes, and designing healthier products for the future. Finally, we discuss best practices for clinicians to ascertain exposure history and teach patients how to avoid harmful exposures and help their bodies eliminate contaminates through better dietary and lifestyle practices.
Throughout this book, we share vetted, practical resources and tools--including websites, phone apps, physician and patient hand-outs--to help healthcare practitioners facilitate healthier choices for themselves and their patients.
This text is unique in that it offers tangible, practical information that can easily be integrated into the daily work flow of patient clinical care.

New research from CDC surveillance of COVID-19 infection shows disproportionate hospitalization and death among patients with history of co-morbid health conditions. Dr. Cohen discussed underlying environmental factors, including EDCs that contribute to the inflammatory response in patients with co-morbidities and those that are severely ill. She also discussed medications and nutrients being studied as possible therapeutics. She shared evidence-based recommendations regarding diet, medication use, smoking cessation, chemicals exposure, supplement use, and other lifestyle interventions that may impact morbidity and mortality from COVID-19.
