I like the information the Dallas Fed releases on energy, especially relating to the oil and gas industry (Q1 2024 survey linked in comments) This chart from their last quarterly survey keeps sticking in my mind.... The profitable price of development is going up and is $64/bbl on avg. This makes sense as operators are moving into Tier 2+ rock (less productive) and face inflated costs of services along with higher cost of capital. I think a lot about how our industry innovated in the late 90's through ~2010 and I wonder what might be the next innovation that pushes recoveries even further....

Our team tracks/estimates the quarterly revenues of not quite 1,000 oilfield service companies around the planet. Of these 1,000, about 70 are drilling contractors and 35 are frac service companies working on US land. The work is part art, part science since very few of these companies are public and the public ones rarely report something as helpful as product line revenues (they did in the olden days of 25 years ago). But consider just land drillers and frac service companies in the US - even though they both work on a new well, the jobs they each do are completely dissimilar. One creates the hole in the ground, the other cracks the rock open. They each rely on a pump, but even the pumps are remarkably dissimilar. And good luck trying to find similarities in how the two services are priced. That said, the revenues generated by one active drilling rig working for a quarter and the revenues generated by one active frac crew working for a quarter track almost perfectly. The scales are different, but the trends are the same. The one time the trends diverged was coming out of COVID - frac got very busy very quickly and frac prices rose sharply while land drilling prices rose at a more measured pace. Here at the end of 2024, the so-called dreaded "white space" has been appearing on the schedules of available frac crews - days or weeks when the crew is idle waiting for the next well pad to begin. This is hurting the frac industry's dollars of revenue per quarter per crew average. Not so with rigs. We believe one of two things will happen with frac in Q1 2025: Either frac service companies will permanently idle another crew or two each or they will live with white space so they can respond when the phone rings. Since frac is profitable and debt for most service companies is in good shape, I think they will live with white space to keep good hands and ready equipment.

Greg's Response:🎙 For both batch and continuous reactors, reaction completion control seeks to provide a complete conversion of all reactants and consequently no excess accumulation of a reactant in a particular phase. If the reactants are in different phases and the product is a single phase, inventory control can be used for reaction completion control. The product must be a gas, liquid, or solids with no recycle streams from downstream or co-products in the other phases. Using these concepts one can determine whether inventory control provides completion control. For a liquid product, excess gas reactant is inherently prevented by pressure control for both batch and continuous processes. For a gas product, excess liquid reactant is inherently prevented by level control for continuous processes and possibly for solids control via phase separator (e.g., recirculation line hydroclone) for all processes. For a liquid product, a pressure controller provides continuous completion control by increasing gas feed for a decrease in pressure from a deficiency of gas reactant and by decreasing gas feed for an increase in pressure from an excess of gas reactant. The gas phase reaction is normally fast enough for the gas reactant to be totally consumed in the reaction so that only the inerts are left in the overhead vapor space. An off-gas purge flow prevents the accumulation of inerts. A level controller maintains the liquid material balance by manipulating the liquid product discharge flow. For a gas product, a level controller provides continuous completion control by increasing liquid feed for a decrease in level for a deficiency of liquid reactant and decreasing liquid feed for an increase in level from an excess of liquid reactant. A purge flow from the bottom prevents the accumulation of inerts in the liquid phase. The residence time control by the level loop shown for a liquid single-phase reactor could help maintain the best residence time in the gas phase and besides the liquid phase by keeping the bubble rise time constant. A dynamic simulation that includes all the phases, process time constants, mixing delays, measurement and valve 5Rs, and all thermal time constants is critical for detailing and tuning the best control strategy. ONEOK is buying a set of NGL pipelines for $280 million. The announcement says a lot about contemporary oil & gas strategy. Let’s start with the corporate speak: ====== "This strategic acquisition provides the quickest pipeline connectivity to and within the critical supply and demand centers for our NGLs, refined products and crude oil assets in the Gulf Coast," said Pierce H. Norton II, ONEOK president and chief executive officer. ====== The word “quickest” is incredibly important here. As I’ve remarked before, today’s oil & gas industry is all about time to value. Investors have no patience for future windfalls. The future is way too uncertain. They want to see value today, and often that value is from increased cash flows, a fraction of which go directly to shareholders. You can compare this path – buying existing assets – with the alternative of building your own new pipeline system. Building new systems can be expensive, slow (because of permitting and just general construction limitations), and risky. It’s much easier to buy something in place and integrate it in short order. That’s what ONEOK is committing to do. Another critically important part of the above quote is the mention of the Gulf Coast. Again, with uncertainty at unprecedented levels across the oil & gas landscape, investors prefer a geographical concentration in the most resilient areas of supply and demand. The Gulf Coast certainly qualifies. The Gulf Coast has existing infrastructure, access to land- and water-based distribution networks, and operational efficiencies that will allow it to remain competitive far longer than other, less favorable marketplaces. Our Engineer, Sales Rep and Magician Edwin Lynch can make two spongeballs out of one. And then three. It is magical, but somehow, these spongeballs have been there all the time. US oil and natural gas proved reserves have doubled and tripled like spongeballs since the start of the Shale Revolution: https://lnkd.in/g64u6-xY These EIA forecasts are cautious and do not yet fully reflect the gains in shale oil and gas economics. For example, the cost to produce a US barrel of shale oil has been reduced by 75%. These favorable economics will eventually expand the basins and formations from which we produce. Sometimes, though, the EIA is less careful, taking into account the magical notion that reserves generally GROW with time. In the plot below, they forecast US natural gas production through 2050. The blue area represents a cool quadrillion cubic feet, 1 Qcf, or 1,000 Tcf. For reference - that represents 10x the original Groningen Gas Field in the Netherlands, one of the biggest gas fields in the world when it was discovered in the early 1960s. About a week from now Spears & Associates will start sending out our quarterly reports on a couple dozen oilfield service and equipment markets. Cementing is my responsibility (I was once upon a time a moderately skilled cementer for Halliburton in what is today called the SCOOP/STACK). This particular report will show that the two US Land market leaders - HAL & SLB - focus on the largest, most active E&P companies...a fact that we all know, but here's the math: 15 E&P companies represent HALF the spending on cementing services this year (EOG, Exxon, Chevron...). Of these top 15 customers, HAL + SLB win 70% of their cementing work. Of the next 1000 customers HAL + SLB win 45%. As the top end of the E&P world consolidates, SLB + HAL cementers will benefit. PS: Each cementing service company has excellent cementers and engineers and we think that most cementing service companies have the people and the equipment to cement the toughest of horizontal wells. The differentiation is this: SLB and HAL are particularly good at working inside the major oil companies' operations and procurement groups.
