On being a spiritual leader for 2025 A conversation between Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Hood and Vera Lester Vera Lester: I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be a spiritual teacher or leader today. Would you mind if we talked about that? About what that means to you today, at this moment? Jeff Hood: I think a lot of times, people aren't prepared to tell the truth. I think most pastors or spiritual leaders are prepared to tell the truth. I think that is one of the scariest things to think about: this election shows us who we are. VL: Yeah, I think a lot of people have been living in denial about that reality. I mean, I woke up on Wednesday and was like, ‘I am disappointed but I am not surprised.’ JH: I think that then, we have to tell the truth. I think that certainly life is going to be harder for undocumented people, trans people -- but it was already difficult. There's this assumption that somehow we were morally superior a week ago. And now, because of these results, we're automatically not -- and that's not true. Everybody wants to talk [to me] about executions. I mean for the people that I've been with, or have been executed in the last two years. I mean, what difference does it make, you know what I'm saying? VL: Yeah, and the guys on death row were on death row last Friday are still on death row. JH: And, yes, we might see more federal executions. But all of this stuff was already in the works. We are really buying into this sort of capitalistic two party system to say that the world is all that much different today than it was a week ago. I mean: the oppression continues. VL: One of my entry points into spiritual practice was recovery work -- and it has taught me, as you said, to always be grounding into the truth. To focus on the reality of what's happening right now, rather than future tripping about what might happen or how bad it will be. That’s not to say we don't consider the worst case scenario and prepare ourselves in some way. But when you love somebody who is an addict, there is always a possibility that they're gonna pick up. And you know that every time they pick up that they have the potential of dying. It is that urgent all the time. But I have friends who have lost children and partners to accidental overdose, and they say that no amount of worrying about that worst case scenario actually prepared them emotionally or helped them when the worst happened. So I think part of me is leaning into that right now. I’m not sure what is happening here [in New Orleans], right now, but I’m trying to stay present. I know it’s important to build networks of support, mutual aid, and finding ways to “spiritually arm” ourselves. In one of my recent Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (QHHT) sessions, I witnessed something extraordinary—a moment when my client’s spirit fully separated from her body. The dialogue that unfolded was deeply insightful: ⭐️ The body, or “vessel,” shared its perspective of navigating physical reality—marked by linear time, sensory experiences, and survival instincts. ⭐️ The spirit, on the other hand, revealed an existence of timelessness, emotional freedom, and expansive purpose, unshackled by physical limits. This session was more than just a breakthrough; it was a profound reminder that we are both finite and infinite, bound and free.
