"I already have a communications team." Is there a scientist among them? PR, social media, and UX/UI folx expertly build awareness and, depending on your product, bring consumers to your door. But when it comes to stakeholders -- I'm talking funders, regulators, policymakers, community groups, affiliates, enterprise clients -- they want to dig deeper. To check your math, so to speak. These are the people you create reports, briefs, white papers, and proposals for. The ones who want a sophisticated, persuasive document that show you're worth your salt. The ones whose impression of you will determine the impact your initiative will -- or won't -- have. Don't ask your Marketing Lead to proofread your white paper. She's trained in communications, not science and engineering. She'll do her best. But she'll end up skirting around the technical explanations. Or watering down their robustness. (And honestly, she has enough work already.) Don't miss the chance to make a lasting impression on those all-important stakeholders. Get a Science Interpreter. When you see the results (and the TIME you'll not be spending eeking out a report over the weekend) you'll be glad you did.

The response I’ve received from my book, Command the Crisis, has been such an encouragement from people like Elizabeth Caraway and so many others I’ve served with. My military stories demonstrate how businesses across all industries can take a cue from those on the frontlines, prepare for a crisis before it occurs and then manage through it once it happens. As RFK Jr. takes the reins at HHS, 2025 could mark a pivotal year for health communications. In an era where public health narratives are shaped often by platforms like TikTok rather than by the CDC, the need for science-backed education has never been greater. Patients are increasingly using social media to self-educate, which makes clear, compelling, and evidence-driven storytelling critical. And yes, some of this will be from corporations/brands but at the end of the day we will have to lean on trusted voices. I see certified physicians and patient-led communities playing hero roles in bridging the gap between credible data and accessible communication. Companies like MedFluencers and Savvy Cooperative are already leading the charge, proving that health literacy and authenticity can coexist on these platforms. With rare disease communities already demonstrating how empowered, knowledgeable patients can drive better outcomes, could this become the evolving model for all healthcare communications?

As a communications consultant who mentors others getting into consulting, my biggest piece of advice is: don’t overthink yourself out of acting. PR people have the tendency to be perfectionists (it’s me, hi).  ✏ Iteration is your friend. Your business will need to (and is allowed to!) constantly shift and change as you gain experience in the market. It’s not going to be a perfect flip-a-switch and go! ☠ Perfectionism = death when it comes to getting started. Whether it’s a website, social page, services/offerings, or researching tech tools, I see so many people miss out on great opportunities (or fail to launch altogether) because of the hesitation that perfectionism creates. #communications #PR #consulting #publicrelations

PR Pros...We have a chance to do 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄, and it’s up to you to make it happen. During a national crisis, like an assassination attempt on a former U.S. president and current candidate, the moment that demands more than just a standard response. As someone who has crafted plenty of statements and advised on what to say and when to say it, I look at this moment and think, there’s a chance to 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄. Condemning violence is a must and well wishes are important, but there’s a chance to say more if you’re a CEO. Think about where your company stands in the larger societal landscape. Consider your brand's history and values. Reflect on your past engagements in the political realm. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧, 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. What does "saying more" look like? It’s about thoughtful, empathetic, and action-oriented communication. It’s about recognizing the unique position you hold and using it to guide public discourse. CEOs and leaders have the power to influence, to lead, and to make a difference. Let’s not let this moment pass by with mere platitudes. Let’s embrace our roles and speak out, clearly and boldly, in support of unity, empathy, and action. There is a profound chance to say more, and we can do more - we can represent our brands AND contribute to healing a divided country. I talk about this and more in my latest article...check it out.

PR tip of the day: Media relations is a subset of public relations, which is a subset of Communications. At this mid-year point, take a moment to look at all your public-facing information. Every portion of your website (yes even the job listings,) public reports, social media accounts, Google search results, etc. Does it get your message across? Is it clear? Can it be refreshed? What's the latest date on your website (hint: if the most recent date is 2019, that is different era by now). Your owned media leads to earned media - if your basic communication doesn't resonate with the public, it is not going to resonate with a reporter. Remember, reporters want news - but also reporters are human beings too.
