Our initiative is organizing a half-day research-policy symposium to showcase successful innovations in last-mile governance to improve social programs and promote community resilience. Dr. Rohini Pande, Henry J. Heinz II Professor of Economics and Faculty Director of Inclusion Economics, will present case studies on streamlining benefit transfers and fostering accountability in MGNREGS. Dr. Maulik Jagnani, Assistant Professor in the Fletcher School and Department of Economics at Tufts University, will present a second session on enabling flood resilience through community early warning systems. This event aims to showcase how collaborations between policymakers, researchers, and private sector actors can drive innovative and impactful work and livelihood programming at the last mile. Speakers at the event include Shri Charanjit Singh (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India), Roshan Nair (United States Agency for International Development), and Karan Agarwal, Strategic Partnerships Development Manager (APAC Lead), Google. A new study by EGC affiliate Penny Goldberg (Yale Department of Economics, Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs) and coauthor Gaurav Chiplunkar (University of Virginia Darden School of Business) finds that removing the barriers to entrepreneurship can have a “multiplier effect” on India’s economy.
