International Energy Agency (IEA)’s new report, The Future of Geothermal Energy, underscores geothermal’s massive untapped potential for clean power, with IEA predicting that geothermal could meet up to 15%, or 800 GW, of global electricity demand growth over the next 25 years.   At XGS Energy, we’re taking bold steps to realize this potential with our closed loop system. Next-generation geothermal energy technologies will play an important role in achieving a 100 percent clean energy grid that is cost-effective and reliable. To unlock its full potential, the World Resources Institute outlined actionable recommendations for state and federal policymakers to foster the responsible development and commercialization of next-gen geothermal energy in its recent Issue Brief.    XGS’s Lucy Darago, Ph.D. participated in a WRI roundtable earlier this year to help inform the generation of this report. Today and tomorrow, our Director of Systems Design Marek Kozikowski, Ph.D. is attending Southwest Research Institute’s Geothermal Energy and Machinery Systems (GEMS) Workshop in San Antonio, Texas. Lucy will lead a discussion on “Clean Baseload Energy Everywhere from Next-generation Geothermal,” covering the technical advances unlocking new addressable markets for geothermal energy production, plus permitting, financing, and other considerations for large-scale geothermal deployment. The session will also include small group discussions led by industry experts on a range of other clean energy technologies, including long-duration energy storage, fusion, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, and thermal energy storage. Demand for geothermal energy production is growing across the United States as companies look towards reliable sources of clean, firm power. As a result, we’re seeing increased efforts from policy makers to address development challenges and expedite deployment of geothermal technology. Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives passed two bills focused on addressing some of the regulatory barriers to deploying geothermal energy, led by Representative John Curtis and Representative Michelle Steel with large bipartisan support. XGS is excited to see forward momentum on geothermal policies – these and other policies will ensure that the United States is well positioned to scale next-generation geothermal technologies from research and development to full-scale commercial integration across the nation’s electricity grids.
