Attending the 160th anniversary of McAllister Towing was a profoundly meaningful experience. Founded in 1864 by my great-great-great-grandfather, Captain James McAllister, who emigrated from Ireland, the company began with a single sail lighter in New York Harbor. Over the years, it has grown into one of the oldest and largest family-owned marine towing and transportation companies in the United States, operating a fleet of more than 75 vessels across 17 locations along the U.S. East Coast, from Portland, ME, to San Juan, PR. Although I have never been an employee or owner, my connection to McAllister Towing runs deep, as it does for everyone in our family. Now, working with Wingspan Legacy Partners as an advisor to family-owned businesses and family offices, I view our family’s history through a fresh lens. Celebrating this milestone underscored the importance of legacy, resilience, and the shared pride that binds generations. A heartfelt thank you to my cousin, McAllister Towing President Brian Buckley McAllister, for organizing such a wonderful celebration and for including all of us in honoring this incredible legacy. Reflecting on McAllister Towing’s journey from a single sail lighter to a modern fleet engaged in ship docking, general harbor towing, coastal towing, windfarm support, and bulk transportation, I am inspired by the enduring spirit and dedication that have propelled the company through 160 years of maritime excellence. Here’s to the legacy of Captain James McAllister and to the future generations who will continue to steer McAllister Towing toward new horizons. #familybusiness #familylegacy

  • Legacies aren’t built overnight. It takes years of thoughtful planning and meaningful action to ensure that your family’s name and mission stand the test of time.     In practical terms, that means today is the right time to address and prioritize the issues that are most important to you and your legacy. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, and if you procrastinate the work that matters most, you risk leaving your most cherished goals unrealized.    To prioritize your family’s legacy, you’ll need to make governance decisions, bridge the gap between Now Gen and Rising Gen family members, and commit to having difficult conversations around succession and impact. These decisions can lay the groundwork for a legacy that will last long after you’re gone.    #FamilyLegacy #Governance #RisingGen #FamilyEnterprise #FamilyOffice

  • One of the trickiest things about being part of a family enterprise is that the line between business and personal communication can get blurry. It may be tempting to avoid difficult topics, but in a new article, our founder Christina Wing provides insights on how to navigate these conversations on subjects like succession, employment policies, and the best uses of family wealth. The key to making conversations productive is to implement best practices and, when necessary, to reframe dialogue to make it less confrontational and more collaborative. These best practices include: - Letting participants know the topic ahead of time  - Selecting a neutral location for the meeting  - Approaching the dialogue with an open mind and a willingness to listen  - Fostering intergenerational respect between Now Gen and Rising Gen family members Having these discussions leads to good family governance, which can in turn help the family avoid grievances or misunderstandings of a personal nature in the future. • Wingspan founder Christina Wing was asked for a comment in a new Bloomberg article from Ben Stupples about the ongoing boom in women-led family offices. The article focuses on rising leaders such as Trendyol’s Demet Mutlu, who recently founded her own investment firm in London to help her manage her growing fortune.  There are now more than two dozen women in leadership positions at some of the largest and most influential family offices in the world. These women are making their impact felt in a variety of ways. As a rule, women tend to be less speculative in their investments and, according to a September 2024 article from the Harvard Center for International Development, more likely to create social impact through their businesses. What it all boils down to is that the world’s richest women have doubled their wealth since 2018 and are poised to inherit $34 trillion by 2030. As Christina is quoted as saying, “Women are taking control. And it’s about time.” https://lnkd.in/eVd8zRpH #FamilyOffice #FamilyEnterprise #GreatWealthTransfer #RisingGen #WomenOfWealth

  • Family Capital has announced their picks for the Top 25 Family Enterprise Academics of 2024, and we are thrilled that our founder, Christina Wing, is on the list. More than 400 experts were nominated for inclusion. Christina has proven herself to be a respected scholar on the subject of family enterprises, teaching both Rising Gen MBAs and family business executives at Harvard Business School how to excel in leadership roles and build lasting legacies. Women are often underrepresented in this field, so it’s wonderful that nine women, including Christina, made the FamCap25 this year. It’s a sign that women are claiming their power in our industry. We couldn’t be prouder that our founder is leading the way. Please join us in congratulating Christina on her hard work supporting Wingspan’s clients and her impact in the area of family enterprise. The leaders of tomorrow are in excellent hands. https://lnkd.in/eC4hR2rw #FamilyEnterprise #FamilyOffice #FamCap25 #FamilyLegacy

  • Wingspan’s founder Christina Wing presented yesterday at the Institute for Family Governance’s Miami Conference on the topic “Does Avoidance of Difficult Conversation Prevent Good Governance?” Her message: families and their advisors should commit to work together to foster open, honest dialogue, recognizing that addressing tough topics is crucial for the success of the family enterprise. If family members aren’t aligned on important matters such as leadership, distributions, and succession, they’ll undoubtedly encounter difficulty when it comes to governance. “Clarity is kindness” was her message, and she gave the audience her top tips for making difficult conversations more productive. #IFGMiami2024 #IFGWorldwide #RisingGen #FamilyGovernance #FamilyOffices #FamilyBusiness #Succession

  • Today is Giving Tuesday, a day when we focus on #philanthropy and think about what our families can do to secure their legacies and make the world a better place. Warren Buffett recently announced a donation of $1.1 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock to his family’s four foundations and appointed three new trustees to oversee the distribution of his wealth in the event it can’t all be given away during his children’s lifetimes. This means that he’s now committed to giving away 99% of his personal fortune. Buffett is a perfect example of what it looks like to build a legacy of giving. His wealth will continue to serve society long after he’s gone, and his family will forever be known for their philanthropic efforts. For families thinking about their own legacies, Giving Tuesday is an excellent time to reflect on questions like: - What values do we want our philanthropy to reflect?  - How do we measure the impact of our contributions?  - How can philanthropy strengthen our family bonds? Answering these questions can help families align their giving with their core principles, create sustainable impact, and foster deeper connections across generations. https://lnkd.in/dcg9YhcN   #GivingTuesday #FamilyPhilanthropy #FamilyLegacy
