I’m very excited to be teaching Washington University in St. Louis School of Law’s inaugural “AI and the Practice of Law” course in January! A big thank you to Dean Stefanie Lindquist and Vice Dean Peggie Smith for the opportunity. WashU is committed to being at the forefront of technology and law, and I’m thrilled to be a small part of their efforts. WashU Law School Teams With WickardAI On Legal AI Program (Law360) By Matt Perez | 2024-12-17 The School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis announced Tuesday the launch of a new program in collaboration with startup WickardAI focused on artificial intelligence and the practice of law. The program will be taught by Oliver Roberts, co-founder of WickardAI which helps teach and implement artificial intelligence at law firms and schools. It will be offered to Washington University law students starting next month. The curriculum will include technical understanding of AI and large language models, their practical applications in law, ethical obligations, and what people can expect in the near future in the technology space. "This initiative is among the first in the country to offer an immersive, multidisciplinary approach to legal AI education to all law students," Roberts said in Tuesday's announcement. "It positions WashU Law at the forefront of legal AI education, and we're thrilled to be a part of it." Students will specifically learn key terms and technologies within the AI space, how it's being applied to legal practice, navigating the current regulatory landscape, best practices for safeguarding client data, and broader topics on the future of the software and its impact. The school joins early adopters of AI-focused legal courses. Arizona State University's law school announced in June that it would add courses on AI to the curriculum for its master of legal studies, master of laws and juris doctor degree programs. "This program reflects WashU Law's commitment to innovation and to positioning our students at the forefront of a tech-focused legal future," Dean Stefanie Lindquist said in a statement Tuesday. "By integrating modern technology education with practical applications into our curriculum, we're preparing our students to use legal technology and generative artificial intelligence ethically and effectively." Based in Washington, D.C., WickardAI provides legal AI education and technology solutions to organizations, law schools and lawyers. Its leadership staff has prior experience at law firms like Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP and Jones Day, technology giants like Meta and Amazon, and Harvard Law School. Roberts, who is also the company's chief executive, currently serves as an associate and co-head of the AI practice group at Holtzman Vogel…

Attended the Legal AI Demo Day online webinar yesterday! [11 Dec] 🤖 ⚖️ 15 innovative legal startups showcased their work in just 120 minutes of 8 minute demos, hosted by the The National Law Review and Wickard. It was an eye-opening experience, showcasing just how far AI has come in transforming the legal industry. To pick out just a few features from a few demos, I saw tools like Trellis Law, able to derive arguments directly from case law, giving lawyers precise insights to strengthen their cases. Harvey dynamically adjusted contract clauses for favorability based on the user’s direction, which was really interesting. Another feature I could see being used in multiple ways was Gavel’s ability to turn a specific written up contract into a reusable template. Spellbook positioned itself as “the first autonomous associate,” actively assisting in reviewing and drafting documents, while Responsiv offered complex and thorough legal research capabilities. SwiftLaw’s simple and seamless integration of the AI into Microsoft Word for direct collaboration with solicitors for smaller boutique firms was another highlight. Finally, descrybe.ai stood out with its free legal search engine, offering simple, clear and accessible legal knowledge to a broader audience. It was truly exciting to see these tools in action as advertised to potential clients, and to witness what could be (or already is becoming) the future of legal practice! Thank you to all the presenters for such an inspiring event and Shivani Vedhere for chairing —it was such a dynamic session and I’m interested to see how these features appear in and shape the future of legal practice! #LegalTech

Very special thanks to Oliver Roberts and the Wickard and The National Law Review teams for putting all this together! Lets keep the conversation going.

The CLE credit was a nice bonus, but even without the perks I'm glad I attended a quick-hit legal AI demo put on yesterday by Wickard. When you see 15 products presented back-to-back, you quickly recognize ones that "click". Of many takeaways, one is that I was most impressed by the products that integrated AI as part of a larger workflow, to the point that you could forget you were using an "AI" tool. For example, Gavel impressed me with their document automation tool for estate planning. Rather than just using AI, it is a hybrid workflow that first uses conditional logic and prompts to build a document. For example, you indicate whether or not the subject of the will has kids before creating the document, using a simple drop-down menu. The LLM shows up later on to help with language generation in the document itself, but I wouldn't know there was an LLM if you hadn't told me. In the coding space, I'm seeing more discussion about "LLM engineering"--that is, entire applications engineered around LLMs, where the LLM is just one piece of a total program. It was exciting to see these principles being applied on the screen in a legal tech product and makes me optimistic that we'll see more legal software taking this approach in the next 1-2 years.

The biggest tech news this week is Google's breakthrough in quantum computing—a milestone that tracks the topics I explored in my Law.com article this past June. About 7 months ago, I wrote an article about how--amid the current AI buzz--quantum computing "will be the most revolutionary technology in human history." Here's the highlights from my June article: "AI Is Old News, Get Ready for Quantum Computing" - "As AI settles into place in the legal field, a revolutionary—and far more disruptive—technology is already on the horizon: quantum computing." - "Quantum computing is not a term often—if ever—used in the legal field. But in the coming years, quantum computing will be the most revolutionary technology in human history." - "Quantum computing is a cross-disciplinary field incorporating elements of computer science, physics, and mathematics to harness the principles of quantum mechanics to solve advanced problems quicker than classical computing systems. In the simplest terms, quantum computers process data in ways that classical computers cannot. While classical computers utilize "bits" (0s and 1s) as the basic unit of information, quantum computers utilize "quantum bits," or "qubits," which can simultaneously exist in multiple states (at or between 0s and 1s). This phenomenon is called superposition, and it allows quantum computers to evaluate more data simultaneously and in more powerful ways than ever before." . . . - "Today, quantum computing is in its nascent stage, and its practical applications are limited. Large tech companies, like IBM and Google, are developing their own quantum computers, which is a difficult task due to the volatility of qubits."  . . . - "While 2033 may seem far off, the intermediate advances and effects of quantum computing are already being felt in the legal field. Today, quantum computing poses significant risks to consumers, businesses and countries at large. One of the most notable risks is quantum computing's ability to break RSA encryption, which is one of the most widely used encryption methods for securing data and information across the web and devices."  . . . - "In sum, full quantum computing capabilities may be years away, but quantum computing's effects on national security, data privacy, business compliance, and government regulation are ever-present here and now. While the rapid genesis of AI surprised many in the legal field, the slower development of quantum computing technology allows lawyers to begin preparing now for the inevitable technological revolution of society in the quantum computing era."
