Genomic data is generated from millions of individuals worldwide, offering opportunities to drive research and improve clinical care. Sharing this data is critical to advancing discovery in precision medicine. Collectively, we can and should do more to enable genomic data sharing. Here are 12 recommended actions that can be done now, detailed in a newly published Nature Portfolio paper: https://lnkd.in/gSWSS3CV Authors of the publication, including Verily Workbench CTO David Glazer, examined the genomic data sharing landscape, identifying current best practices and future opportunities to turn data into discovery. “Millions of people choose to donate their health-related data to help others. We in the research community can honor their choice by supporting wide data sharing to fuel as many discoveries as possible and wise data sharing to ensure data is used as intended. - David Glazer #genomics #GenomicsData #PrecisionMedicine

Tackling health equity challenges was a featured discussion topic at the Fierce Healthcare Payer Summit this week. Our Chief Clinical Officer and Head of Health Equity Vindell Washington shared strategies and principles we’re applying to Verily solutions: ▶ Design for health equity from the beginning. It’s hard to retrofit. ▶ When it comes to bias and AI, be thoughtful about what data you're using to train the model. ▶ To close health disparities we need to innovate and design with the communities we serve. As digital biomarkers and measures are increasingly used in cardiovascular research and care, it is essential that we better understand potential sources of bias or inaccurate measurement. In collaboration with co-authors from University of Michigan Medical School, Verily researchers conducted a review of how skin tone may impact the accuracy of photoplethysmography (PPG), which is used in pulse oximetry devices and wearables to assess blood oxygenation (SpO2) and pulse rate (PR). The results show significant discrepancies in the accuracy of FDA cleared pulse oximeters and commercially available wearable devices across skin tone. The authors share 5 recommendations to improve analytical validation of these devices. Read detailed findings in JMIR Publications: https://bit.ly/3YMmuYO Verily is committed to representing all skin tones in our research through the work we’re doing with our digital biomarkers program and Study Watch, and our Health Equity Center of Excellence https://bit.ly/3YMvMDZ, and using these learnings to prevent any bias during our algorithm development so that our digital measures generalize to all segments of the population. #DigitalBiomarkers #cardiovascular #HealthEquity

Recently, we dropped the first episode of our new #VerilyNof1 documentary series, bringing to life the promise of precision health through wastewater-based epidemiology. Set in Las Vegas, this is a story of a new innovation to help detect the presence of infectious disease in a population that changes daily. Shout out to our Creative Studio and production crew at Gramafilm | B Corp™ for the behind-the-scenes magic that led to A Watershed Moment. https://bit.ly/3O4Na1X Episode 2 in the series is coming soon! #wastewater #PublicHealth #HealthInnovation #PrecisionHealth

Not only does wastewater monitoring help public health officials understand what infectious diseases might be present in a community, but it is also population equitable. If you are part of the 80% of the U.S. population contributing to a sewer shed, you are counted. Fierce Healthcare breaks down Verily’s approach to wastewater monitoring and our recent activation at HLTH USA 2024. https://bit.ly/4hIl6ik #HLTHUSA #wastewater #PublicHealth #HealthEquity

The Clark County Water Reclamation District in Las Vegas performs regular wastewater testing to understand the community health and prevent disease outbreaks. In collaboration with Verily, they put this into action during HLTH USA when 12,000 people attended the conference on the Strip. Wastewater samples from one week before to one week after HLTH were evaluated for pathogen concentrations. "The methods that we use include droplet digital PCR in order to identify the concentration levels and whether a pathogen is detected," said Amy Lockwood, Verily public health partnerships lead.
